Supporting First-Year Exploratory Students in the Process of Major Exploration and Selection: A Qualitative Multiple Case Study
Denise Tiberio
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Marymount University
This qualitative multiple-case study examined the experiences of exploratory students and the support provided by university resources and academic advising throughout their transition and major exploration. Data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews with the five exploratory students who entered the university in the Fall of 2021. The data from these interviews was coded using Braun et al. (2016) thematic analysis method and three themes emerged: (a) overall lack of support in high school and college, (b) a lack of resources for the exploratory student as they transition into college, and (c) first-year exploratory advising needs. The findings from the data revealed that participants were looking for more support in their transition from high school to college by both their high school and university. The findings also supported the use of the developmental advising model when working with exploratory students and the implementation of specific transitional programs to assist in guiding them through major exploration. Future research on exploratory students will assist in providing the data needed to increase the support and programs developed for this population.
