Karen Zwanch; Brooke Mullins – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2025
To understand the ways that manipulatives might support changes in students' reasoning about algebraic generalizations, a constructivist teaching experiment was conducted with two sixth-grade students. The students interpreted numerical situations with units of one and could construct units of units in mental activity. Initially, the students'…

Fernandes, Anthony; Kahn, Leslie H.; Civil, Marta – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2017
In this article, we use multimodality to examine how bilingual students interact with an area task from the National Assessment of Educational Progress in task-based interviews. Using vignettes, we demonstrate how some of these students manipulate the concrete materials, and use gestures, as a primary form of structuring their explanations and…

Sinclair, Margaret; Mamolo, Ami; Whiteley, Walter J. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2011
This article focuses on the development and problematization of a task designed to foster spatial visual sense in prospective and practicing elementary and middle school teachers. We describe and analyse the cyclical stages of developing, testing, and modifying several "task drafts" related to ideas around dilation and proportion. Challenged by…

Stacey, Kaye; Helme, Sue; Archer, Shona; Condon, Caroline – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2001
Reports on a study comparing the use of Multi-base arithmetic blocks (MAB) and an alternative, LAB (linear arithmetic blocks) on the basis of epistemic fidelity and accessibility for students. Use of LAB was associated with more active engagement by students and deeper discussion. (Author/MM)

Moyer, Patricia S. – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2001
Reports on a study of 10 middle grades teachers' uses of manipulatives for teaching mathematics using interviews and observations to explore how and why the teachers used the manipulatives as they did. Concludes that using manipulatives was little more than a diversion in classrooms where teachers were not able to represent mathematics concepts…

Tourniaire, Francoise – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1986
Proportion problems were given to pupils in grades 3-5. Success rates were high, with elementary strategies based on addition often used. Familiarity with the use of ratios in the context, the presence of a mixture, and the use of manipulatives were variables that influenced performance. (Author/MNS)

Sinclair, Anne; Scheuer, Nora – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1993
Six-year-olds from Switzerland (n=30) and Argentina (15 middle- and 15 lower-class) were tested for understanding of inequalities between multidigit numbers and place value. Students could explain size relationships better than place value. The three types of children performed differently. (Contains 30 references.) (JAF)
