The article reviews variables (such as purpose of expression, antecedents, prompts, and consequences) related to the development of non-linguistic communication skills for students with severe or profound handicaps and suggests that future research efforts be directed toward prediction analysis using a two-tiered process. The study with 23 severely hearing impaired adolescents found that subjects using cued speech performed highest on Piagetian conservation problems, the oral-aural group performed better on linguistically-sensitive metaphor problems. This study of the effects of intensive multisensory speech training on the speech production of a profoundly hearing-impaired child (age nine) found that the addition of Visual Phonics hand cues did not result in speech production gains. All six target phonemes were generalized to new words and maintained after the intervention was discontinued.…
