Tour of a Map-Reader's Brain, Part 3: Connections and Auras
Phil Gersmehl
Geography Teacher, v20 n3 p96-104 2023
To know a place, one must observe more than just the "conditions" there. It is also important to know about "connections" with other places, near and far. This article looks at research about geographic connections, with a specific focus on describing the area of influence (the aura) around a geographic feature like a lake, canal, city, or transportation link. Future articles will explore research about region, pattern, analogy, gradient, and other modes of spatial reasoning.
