Zaslavsky, Orit – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1997
Attempts to reveal students' (N=800) misconceptions regarding quadratic functions, and identifies conceptual obstacles that may impede students' understanding. Findings indicate that the conceptual obstacles identified were fairly pervasive. Discusses the educational implications of the findings. Contains 34 references. (JRH)

Ashlock, Robert B. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1987
Considered are three different types of paper-and-pencil items: labeled word statements, symbolizations, and portrayals. The items are used for testing understanding of mathematical concepts. Limitations of pencil-and-paper items are noted. (RH)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Mathematical Concepts
Alson, Pedro – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Presents a device for sketching the graph of the composite and inverse of single variable real-valued functions. Discusses some didactic methods of paths. (YP)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Functions (Mathematics), Graphs, Mathematical Concepts
Clements, M. A.; Del Campo, Gina – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Investigates children's cognitive structures with respect to concepts one-half, one-quarter, and one-third as these apply to continuous circular and triangular regions. Examines the effect of an intervention program with 21 children in grades three through six. (YP)
Descriptors: Elementary School Mathematics, Foreign Countries, Fractions, Geometric Concepts
Vinner, Shlomo – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Investigates the extent to which visual considerations in calculus can be taught and be a natural part of college students' mathematical thinking. Recommends that the legitimacy of the visual approach in proofs and problem solving should be emphasized and that the visual interpretations of algebraic notions should be taught. (YP)
Descriptors: Calculus, College Mathematics, Graphs, Mathematical Concepts
Venger, A. L.; Gorbov, S. F. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1998
Presents a first-semester course in mathematics for 6-year-old children by formulating certain general requirements for the curriculum and the instructional methods with the aim of leading children to form their initial mathematical concepts. (ASK)
Descriptors: Addition, Arithmetic, Course Descriptions, Learning Theories
Clement, John – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Proposes elements of a model of knowledge structures used in comprehending and generating graphs. Uses the competence model to attempt to organize and interpret findings on misconceptions in graphing. Discusses two types of common misconceptions; treating the graph as a picture and slope-height confusions. (YP)

Meaningful Instruction in Fractions: Implementing a Theory in a Low-Achieving Mathematics Classroom.
Morris, Anne – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1995
Low ability sixth graders (n=19) participated in a teaching experiment involving fraction concepts. Results showed students were able to acquire and use semantic processes and transfer these processes to novel tasks. Semantic processing was positively associated with performance. (MKR)
Descriptors: Concept Formation, Fractions, Grade 6, Interviews
Tsamir, Pessia; Sheffer, Ruth; Tirosh, Dina – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 2000
Describes a study that explores secondary school students' conceptions of division by zero. Examines whether students identify expressions involving division by zero as undefined or tend to assign them numerical values. Studies students' justifications and analyzes the effects of age and level of achievement in mathematics on students' responses…
Descriptors: Division, Knowledge Level, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematics Achievement
Nik Pa, Nik Azis – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Concepts of fractions from an adult perspective as well as from a child's perspective are examined. Types of students' schemes for some terms related to fractions are reported. (YP)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Concept Formation, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics
Ross, Sharon H. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1990
The 5-stage model of Ross was used to examine the role of instruction in facilitating children's acquisition of place value knowledge. Compares children from 2 samples on 10 tasks designed to reveal their thinking about place value. Discusses implications for theory and classroom. (YP)
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Elementary Education, Elementary School Mathematics, Mathematical Concepts
Steffe, Leslie P.; Cobb, Paul – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1998
Discusses the development of multiplicative and divisional schemes within a constructivist framework. Illustrates child thinking and child methods relative to the meanings of these operations using interviews with children. Compares the constructivist perspective on the development of meanings of multiplication and division to what is found in…
Descriptors: Arithmetic, Concept Formation, Constructivism (Learning), Division
delMas, Robert C.; Bart, William M. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Investigated are three misconceptions of probability and the differential effect of two activity-based instructional units. Response categories (law of averages, law of small numbers, and availability) are identified. Treatment differences (evaluation or no evaluation) appear to influence subjects' interpretations of the information. (YP)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Cognitive Structures, College Mathematics, Higher Education
Lowenthal, Francis; Vandeputte, Christiane – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1989
Introduces an introductory module for analysis. Describes stock of basic functions and their graphs as part one and three methods as part two: transformations of simple graphs, the sum of stock functions, and upper and lower bounds. (YP)
Descriptors: College Mathematics, Equations (Mathematics), Foreign Countries, Functions (Mathematics)
Chandlet, Donald G.; Brosnan, Patricia A. – Focus on Learning Problems in Mathematics, 1994
Content analysis of 7 mathematics textbook series, grades 1-8, found that textbooks published after 1989 (when NCTM Standards were published) showed shifts of emphasis among content areas; changes in amount of content development, drill, word problems, and problem solving; and increased use of estimation and calculators.
