Lilly, Gwynfa – Mathematics in School, 1989
Describes how five-year-old children responded to the investigation of looking for patterns in a multiplication square. Provides a 10 x 10 multiplication square for the investigation. (YP)
Descriptors: Computation, Foreign Countries, Mathematical Applications, Mathematical Logic

Hope, John A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
This case study examined the performance of a 13-year-old highly skilled mental calculator on mental multiplication tasks. She solved difficult tasks by using various ingenious calculation methods, including distributing, factoring, and recalling the product directly. Implications for instruction are reported. Talton, Carolyn F.; Francis, Azalia S. – 1987
Thinking Approach to Problem Solving (TAPS) is a decision-making model that will assist students, kindergarten through grade eight, to decide on the choice of operation in routine mathematical word problems. The TAPS algorithm, or plan, suggests that students read a word problem, determine the question to be answered in the problem, use concrete…

Sawyer, W. W. – Mathematics in School, 1989
This article discusses the classroom use of discovery of number pattern. Provided are examples of a table of squares, multiplications of numbers, and algebraic expressions. (YP)

Pagni, David, Ed. – 1991
The National Science Foundation funded Calculators and Mathematics Project, Los Angeles (CAMP-LA) developed curriculum materials focused solely on the use of calculators. The project was developed in three stages. The first stage studied the mathematics curriculums from different states and identified topics that are not included but should be if…
