Hidayat, Riyan; Syed Zamri, Sharifah Norul Akmar; Zulnaidi, Hutkemri; Abdullah, Mohd Faizal Nizam Lee; Adnan, Mazlini – European Journal of Educational Research, 2021
Several concerted movements toward mathematical modeling have been seen in the last decade, reflecting the growing global relationship between the role of mathematics in the context of modern science, technology and real life. The literature has mainly covered the theoretical basis of research questions in mathematical modeling and the use of…

Julie, Cyril – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2020
A widely used instrument was implemented to ascertain the mathematical modelling competency displayed by a cohort of South African learners in grade 10 and grade 12 of the school mathematics programme in South Africa. The cohort comprised 471 grade 10 and 200 grade 12 learners from schools serving learners from low socio-economic status…

Ferrando, Irene; Albarracín, Lluís – Mathematics Education Research Journal, 2021
One hundred four students aged 8 to 16 worked on one Fermi problem involving estimating the number of people that can fit in their school playground. We present a qualitative analysis of the different mathematical models developed by the students. The analysis of the students' written productions is based on the identification of the model of…

Degrande, Tine; Van Hoof, Jo; Verschaffel, Lieven; Van Dooren, Wim – ZDM: The International Journal on Mathematics Education, 2018
Previous studies have repeatedly shown that children often incorrectly use an additive model for multiplicative word problems, and a multiplicative model for additive word problems. The present study aimed to investigate which model upper primary school children tend to choose in word problems that are open to "both" ways of reasoning.…

Weyns, Anke; Van Dooren, Wim; Dewolf, Tinne; Verschaffel, Lieven – Educational Psychology, 2017
We investigated the effect of emphasising the realistic modelling complexity in text or in the accompanying picture on the solution of P-items, in relation to pupils' grade. 290 pupils from the 5th and 6th grade of various elementary schools in Flanders (Belgium) made a paper-and-pencil task with 7 word problems that are problematic from a…

Wilson, Tim; Barkatsas, Tasos – Mathematics Education Research Group of Australasia, 2014
This study investigates the relationship between students ability to answer reduced language dependency mathematical questions with their overall numeracy level. It investigates whether a student's success at reduced language mathematical questions translates into better overall numeracy scores. It was found, students have up to two years…

Hayes, Brett K.; Fritz, Kristina; Heit, Evan – Developmental Psychology, 2013
In 2 studies, the authors examined the development of the relationship between inductive reasoning and visual recognition memory. In both studies, 5- to 6-year-old children and adults were shown instances of a basic-level category (dogs) followed by a test set containing old and new category members that varied in their similarity to study items.…

National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER), 2013
This publication presents estimates of apprentice and trainee activity in Australia for the September quarter 2012. The figures in this publication are derived from the National Apprentice and Trainee Collection no.74 (December 2012 estimates). The most recent figures in this publication are estimated (those for training activity from the March…

Brubacher, Sonja P.; Roberts, Kim P.; Powell, Martine – Developmental Psychology, 2012
Children (N = 157) 4 to 8 years old participated 1 time (single) or 4 times (repeated) in an interactive event. Across each condition, half were questioned a week later about the only or a specific occurrence of the event ("depth first") and then about what usually happens. Half were prompted in the reverse order ("breadth first"). Children with…

Madhyastha, Tara M.; Hunt, Earl; Deary, Ian J.; Gale, Catharine R.; Dykiert, Dominika – Intelligence, 2009
In longitudinal studies data is collected in a series of waves. Each wave after the first suffers from attrition. Therefore it can be difficult to discriminate between changes in sample parameters due to a longitudinal process (e.g. ageing) and changes due to attrition. The problem is particularly vexing if one of the purposes is to compare…

Donders, Jacobus – Assessment, 2008
The purpose of this study is to determine the latent structure of the California Verbal Learning Test-Second Edition (CVLT-II; Delis, Kramer, Kaplan, & Ober, 2000) at three different age levels, using the standardization sample. Maximum likelihood confirmatory factor analyses are performed to test four competing hypothetical models for fit and…

Brainerd, C. J. – Monographs of the Society for Research in Child Development, 1990
Replies to Guttentag's commentary on Brainerd and others' research on forgetting. Discusses measurement of forgetting, differentiation of storage from retrieval factors, and ramifications of findings for strategic or process theories of memory development. Considers the role of research on forgetting in child development research. (BC)

Hall, Susan J.; Depauw, Karen P. – Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, 1982
A theoretical 18-link model of the human body was designed as a sex-generalized predictor of segmental inertial parameters. Body measurements of 40 male and female subjects from 6 to 35 years of age were used. The results were similar to those reported in other studies and the photogrammetric procedure was found to be facilitative. (Authors/JN)
