Velasco, S.; Roman, F. L.; Gonzalez, A.; White, J. A. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science & Technology, 2006
In the nineteenth century many people tried to seek a value for the most famous irrational number, [pi], by means of an experiment known as Buffon's needle, consisting of throwing randomly a needle onto a surface ruled with straight parallel lines. Here we propose to extend this experiment in order to evaluate other irrational numbers, such as…

Rennie, Robert R.; Villegas, C. – Journal of Multivariate Analysis, 1976
An asymptotic theory is developed for a new time series model introduced in TM 502 289. An algorithm for computing estimates of the parameters of this time series model is given, and it is shown that these estimators are asymptotically efficient in that they have the same asymptotic distribution as the maximum likelihood estimators. Aitkin's generalized least squares (GLS) principle, with the inverse of the observed variance-covariance matrix as a weight matrix, is applied to estimate the factor analysis model in the exploratory (unrestricted) case. It is shown that the GLS estimates are scale free and asymptotically efficient. The estimates are computed by a rapidly…

Moore, William E. – 1970
The previous theoretical development of the Poisson process as a strong model for the true-score theory of mental tests is discussed, and additional theoretical properties of the model from the standpoint of individual examinees are developed. The paper introduces the Erlang process as a family of test theory models and shows in the context of…
