Emans, Robert – Journal of Reading Behavior, 1970
Descriptors: Classification, Conceptual Schemes, Mathematical Models, Physiology
McEneaney, John E. – 1994
A study compared a parallel distributed processing (PDP) model with a more traditional symbolic information processing model that accounts for early reading acquisition by human subjects. Two experimental paradigms were simulated. In one paradigm (a "savings" paradigm) subjects were divided into two groups and trained with two sets of…

Haertel, Edward H. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1989
A method is presented for using a restricted latent class model--a binary skills model--to determine skills required by a set of test items. Results from the method's application to reading achievement data for about 63,000 fourth graders indicate that the model offers useful information on test structure and examinee ability. (TJH)
Descriptors: Achievement Tests, Elementary School Students, Factor Structure, Grade 4
Phillips, Kenneth L. – 1989
The high percentage of students who have difficulty in solving free-response problems related to the mole concept was addressed by implementation of reading skill strategies and computer assisted instruction. Frayer models, semantic mapping, and graphic organizers from Reading in the Content Area (RICA) were used to increase student understanding…

Sheehan, Kathleen; Mislevy, Robert J. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1990
The 63 items on skills in acquiring and using information from written documents contained in the Survey of Young Adult Literacy in the 1985 National Assessment of Educational Progress are analyzed. The analyses are based on a qualitative cognitive model and an item-response theory model. (TJH)
