Zegers, Frits E.; ten Berge, Jos M. F. – Psychometrika, 1985
Four types of metric scales are distinguished: absolute, ratio, difference, and interval. A general coefficient of association for two variables of the same scale type is developed which reduces to specific coefficients of association for each scale type. (NSF)

Collins, Linda M.; Cliff, Norman – Psychometrika, 1985
The axioms of a three-set Guttman simplex model are presented and the effects of relaxing the axioms for one of the three sets are examined. This model can be used to define longitudinal developmental scales. (NSF)

Rindskopf, David – Psychometrika, 1983
Various models have been proposed for analyzing dichotomous test or questionnaire items which were constructed to reflect an assumed underlying structure (e.g., hierarchical). This paper shows that many such models are special cases of latent class analysis and discusses a currently available computer program to analyze them. (Author/JKS)

Yen, Wendy M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1986
Two methods of constucting equal-interval scales for educational achievement are discussed: Thurstone's absolute scaling method and Item Response Theory. Alternative criteria for choosing a scale are contrasted. It is argued that clearer criteria are needed for judging the appropriateness and usefulness of alternative scaling procedures.…

Coffman, William E. – 1986
The symposium, "Taming the Rasch Tiger: Using Item Response Theory in Practical Educational Measurement," was organized to deemphasize the technical complexities of item response theory (IRT) and to show the audience how IRT can be used in practical educational measurement. Four papers from the symposium are summarized and comments are…

McDonald, Roderick P. – Psychometrika, 1986
There is a unity underlying the diversity of models for the analysis of multivariate data. Essentially, they constitute a family of models, most generally nonlinear, for structural/functional relations between variables drawn from a behavior domain. (Author)

Cook, Linda L.; Eignor, Daniel R. – Educational Measurement: Issues and Practice, 1991
This paper provides the basis for understanding score equating through item response theory (IRT). Theoretical justifications and practical advantages of IRT true-score test procedures are discussed. Three steps in the equating process are specified, and a self-test is included. (SLD)

Choppin, Bruce – Evaluation in Education: An International Review Series, 1985
Using the analogy of temperature measurement, the Rasch model is presented with arguments for its adoption as the basic scaling technique for achievement measures. Three extensions of the Rasch model for more complex testing are developed. Test development for the British national assessment program and the promise of item banking are also…

Zwick, Rebecca – 1986
Although perfectly scalable items rarely occur in practice, Guttman's concept of a scale has proved to be valuable to the development of measurement theory. If the score distribution is uniform and there is an equal number of items at each difficulty level, both the elements and the eigenvalues of the Pearson correlation matrix of dichotomous…

Eignor, Daniel R.; Stocking, Martha L. – 1986
A previous study of pre-equating the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) using item response theory provided unacceptable equating results for SAT-mathematical data. The purpose of this study was to investigate two possible explanations for these unacceptable pre-equating results. Specifically, the calibration process, which made use of the…

Hambleton, Ronald K.; Rogers, H. Jane – 1986
This report was designed to respond to two major methodological shortcomings in the item bias literature: (1) misfitting test models; and (2) the use of significance tests. Specifically, the goals of the research were to describe a newly developed method known as the "plot method" for identifying potentially biased test items and to…
