Vogt, Paul – Cognitive Science, 2012
Cross-situational learning has recently gained attention as a plausible candidate for the mechanism that underlies the learning of word-meaning mappings. In a recent study, Blythe and colleagues have studied how many trials are theoretically required to learn a human-sized lexicon using cross-situational learning. They show that the level of…

Edwards, Roderick; Collins, Laura – Language Learning, 2011
Laufer and Nation (1995) proposed that the Lexical Frequency Profile (LFP) can estimate the size of a second-language writer's productive vocabulary. Meara (2005) questioned the sensitivity and the reliability of LFPs for estimating vocabulary sizes, based on the results obtained from probabilistic simulations of LFPs. However, the underlying…

Seltzer, Michael H. – Journal of Educational Statistics, 1993
A Bayesian approach to sensitivity of inferences to possible outliers involves recalculating marginal posterior distributions of parameters of interest under assumptions of heavy tails. This strategy is implemented in the hierarchical model setting through Gibbs sampling, a Monte Carlo technique, and illustrated through a reanalysis of data on…

Smith, Richard M. – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1987
Partial knowledge was assessed in a multiple choice vocabulary test. Test reliability and concurrent validity were compared using Rasch-based dichotomous and polychotomous scoring models. Results supported the polychtomous scoring model, and moderately supported J. O'Connor's theory of vocabulary acquisition. (Author/GDC)

Atkinson, Richard C. – Journal of Experimental Psychology, 1972
Article examines the problem of individualizing the instructional sequence so that the learning of a second-language vocabulary occurs at a maximum rate. (Author)

The IADIS CELDA 2012 Conference intention was to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There had been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a…
