Albay, Aybegum; Cetin, Hatice – Journal on Mathematics Education, 2023
This is a comprehensive study aiming to examine pre-service primary school teachers' (PPST) mathematical disposition levels in terms of various variables, and to explain the results thoroughly. It employed the explanatory sequential design among the mixed method research designs. The data were collected through Mathematics Dispositional Functions…

Hoffmann, Anna; Even, Ruhama – ZDM: Mathematics Education, 2023
This study focuses on the potential of university mathematics courses to advance teachers' knowledge regarding an important component of knowledge about the nature of mathematics as a scientific discipline, namely the mutual contribution between mathematics and various fields: mathematics contributes to solving problems in different fields, and…

Christopher Nazelli; Deborah Zopf; S. Asli Özgün-Koca – Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE Journal), 2025
In this practitioner-focused article, the authors present a mathematical writing activity for preservice elementary school teachers. The products of this activity, referred to as "journals," are detailed, representation-rich explanations of problems solved in small groups. These journals were originally exchanged across institutions in a…

Anna Marie Bergman; Andrew Kercher; Keith Gallagher; Rina Zazkis – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 2024
Definitions are an integral aspect of mathematics. In particular, they form the backbone of deductive reasoning and facilitate precision in mathematical communication. However, when multiple non-equivalent definitions for the same term exist, their ability to serve these purposes can be called into question. While ambiguity can be productive, the…

Joke Torbeyns; Emke Op't Eynde; Fien Depaepe; Lieven Verschaffel – ZDM: Mathematics Education, 2024
High-quality instruction in preschool is important for children's mathematical development. To date, the domain-specific elements constituting mathematics instruction quality and the factors associated with this quality are hardly studied, resulting in serious gaps in our insights into the topic. We aimed to address this gap by investigating (a)…

J. J. Bissell – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2025
The small angle approximation sin[theta approximately theta] is central to all treatments of the simple pendulum as a harmonic oscillator and is typically asserted as a result that follows from calculus. Here, however, we show that the geometry of the pendulum "itself" offers a route to understanding the origin of the small angle…

Rachel Conlon – ProQuest LLC, 2023
Math achievement is an important predictor of progression to later science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and careers. However, attitudinal factors also play a role, and interventions attempting to improve math attitudes may be important for increasing the number of STEM-aspiring students. To design effective interventions, it…

Melissa Gresalfi; Madison Knows; Jamie Vescio – North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2023
Many scholars have argued that mathematics classrooms often offer narrow conceptions of mathematical excellence, recognizing only some kinds of thinking and some kinds of people as valuable, and conflating mathematical aptitude with overall intelligence. Play offers the potential to disrupt such classroom mathematical practices, by offering new…

Alves, Francisco Régis Vieira; Pinheiro, Carla Patrícia Souza Rodrigues; De Sousa, Renata Teófilo; Catarino, Paula Maria Machado Cruz – Acta Didactica Napocensia, 2023
This article is an excerpt from a master's thesis developed in Brazil, in which we approach recurrent and linear sequences, given some intriguing particularities in their definitions and the scarcity of discussion of this topic in the literature of the History of Mathematics, especially with regard to its geometric representation. Thus, we aim to…

Felix Fernandez; Merle Froschl; Lara Lorenzetti; Maryann Stimmer – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 2024
We conducted a systematic review to generate a comprehensive understanding of cisgendered girls' mathematical identity within the United States to better understand: (a) how mathematical identity is associated with girls' participation, engagement, and achievement in mathematics; (b) the factors related to girls' mathematical identity; and (c)…

Dae S. Hong – School Science and Mathematics, 2024
This study explores calculus students' opportunities to learn the concepts of integral by examining one mathematician's videotaped lessons and the textbook. Results show that both lessons and the textbook introduce important cognitive resources briefly and focus on other units of knowledge. Implications to these results are also discussed.

Kai-Lin Yang; Janina Krawitz; Stanislaw Schukajlow; Chai-Ching Yang; Yu-Ping Chang – European Journal of Psychology of Education, 2024
Based on expectancy-value theory, this study adopted a person-centred approach to explore the heterogeneous profiles of secondary German and Taiwanese students' mathematical modelling task values, and examined the differences in their mathematical modelling performance, controlling for the variable of intra-mathematical knowledge among the…

Benally, Jessica; Palatnik, Alik; Ryokai, Kimiko; Abrahamson, Dor – For the Learning of Mathematics, 2022
We introduce, motivate, and exemplify a proposed theoretical construct guiding the design and facilitation of collaborative geometry activities, conceptually generative perspectival complementarity (CGPC). Participants in CGPC activities learn content by negotiating their respective perceptions of situated features they manipulate to accomplish…

Arsenault, Tessa L.; Powell, Sarah R. – Grantee Submission, 2022
Word-problem features such as text complexity, charts and graphs, position of the unknown, calculation complexity, irrelevant information, and schemas impact word-problem performance. We compared the word-problem performance of typically achieving (TA) students and students with mathematics difficulty (MD). First, we measured the word-problem…

Jahnke, Hans-Niels; Jankvist, Uffe Thomas; Kjeldsen, Tinne Hoff – ZDM: Mathematics Education, 2022
In the HPM (History and Pedagogy of Mathematics) literature, the three mathematicians Henri Poincaré (1854-1912), Felix Klein (1849-1925), and Hans Freudenthal (1905-1990) are often mentioned in relation to having opinions about the role of the history of mathematics in the teaching and learning of mathematics. Such mentioning often appears…
