Vasilyeva, Marina; Casey, Beth M.; Dearing, Eric; Ganley, Colleen M. – Cognition and Instruction, 2009
In this research, we examined overall performance and gender differences in measurement skills in elementary-school students from low-income families. In Study 1, accuracy and error patterns were analyzed in a large sample of fourth-graders; in Study 2 error patterns and strategy usage were examined with a smaller sample of fourth-graders. Study 1…

Birenbaum, Menucha; And Others – Intelligence, 1994
Sex differences in spatial ability were examined in 410 Israeli college students using standard tests of mental rotation. On related abilities tests, males performed better than females on a numerical skills test, and females performed better on an associative memory test. No significant sex differences were found on other ability tests. (SLD)

Bodner, George M.; And Others – 1983
The relationship between students' relative ability in visual-spatial tasks as well as their verbal and numerical skills to their performance in an introductory college chemistry course was investigated. For 700 subjects, verbal and mathematics Scholastic Aptitude Test scores (SAT-V) and (SAT-M) and the following four perceptual tests were…

Lim, Tock Keng – Intelligence, 1994
Confirmatory factor analysis was used to test first- and second-order factor models on cognitive abilities and their invariance across samples of 234 male and 225 female secondary school students. Factor models suggest that males and females may use different problem-solving strategies for spatial analogies, matrices, and numerical problems. (SLD)

Gallagher, Shelagh A. – Psychology of Women Quarterly, 1989
Examines predictor variables involved in the performance of 152 male and 143 female gifted high school juniors on the Scholastic Aptitude Test in mathematics (SAT-M). Concludes that males demonstrate greater visual-spatial ability which plays a dominant role in SAT-M performance. (FMW)

Abel, Theodora Mead; And Others – 1983
Many educators and researchers who believe that girls have less mathematical ability than boys associate this deficiency with girls' inferior spatial ability. This generally accepted belief that spatial skills are a major prerequisite for math achievement was tested through a study of the visual-spatial skills of a sample of 32 professional…
