Earnest, Darrell; Chandler, John – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2021
This article investigates the interplay of time words with how children position hands on an analog clock. Using a mathematics discourse framework (Sfard, 2008), we analyzed how students interpreted precise (e.g., 2:30) and relative (e.g., half past 11) times, finding that particular words are dynamically interwoven with activity. Interviews with…

Pittalis, Marios; Pitta-Pantazi, Demetra; Christou, Constantinos – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2020
A theoretical model describing young students' (Grades 1-3) functional-thinking modes was formulated and validated empirically (n = 345), hypothesizing that young students' functional-thinking modes consist of recursive patterning, covariational thinking, correspondence-particular, and correspondence-general factors. Data analysis suggested that…

Stephens, Ana; Stroud, Rena; Strachota, Susanne; Stylianou, Despina; Blanton, Maria; Knuth, Eric; Gardiner, Angela – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2021
This research focuses on the retention of students' algebraic understandings 1 year following a 3-year early algebra intervention. Participants included 1,455 Grade 6 students who had taken part in a cluster randomized trial in Grades 3-5. The results show that, as was the case at the end of Grades 3, 4, and 5, treatment students significantly…

Supovitz, Jonathan A.; Ebby, Caroline B.; Remillard, Janine T.; Nathenson, Robert – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2021
In this article, we use a two-dimensional assessment to examine the experimental impacts of a mathematics learning trajectory-oriented formative assessment program on student strategies for problems involving multiplication and division. Working from the theory that the development of students' multiplicative reasoning involves improvements in…

Walshaw, Margaret – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2013
In an era when familiar categories of identity are breaking down, an argument is made for using post-structuralist vocabulary to talk about ethical practical action in mathematics education. Using aspects of Foucault's post-structuralism, an explanation is offered of how mathematical identifications are tied to the social organization of power. An…

Tarr, James E.; Walker, Erica N.; Hollebrands, Karen F.; Chval, Kathryn B.; Berry, Robert Q., III; Rasmussen, Chris L.; Konold, Cliff; King, Karen – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2013
The current era of common curriculum standards, increased accountability, and rapid expansion of technology within a complex and highly charged political context has influenced changes in assessment practices in mathematics classrooms. This research commentary situates high-stakes assessments in a historical context, discusses recent advances in…

Tarr, James E.; Grouws, Douglas A.; Chavez, Oscar; Soria, Victor M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2013
The authors examined curricular effectiveness in high schools that offered parallel paths in which students were free to study mathematics using 1 of 2 content organizational structures, an integrated approach or a (traditional) subject-specific approach. The study involved 3,258 high school students, enrolled in either Course 2 or Geometry, in 11…

Matthews, Percival; Rittle-Johnson, Bethany; McEldoon, Katherine; Taylor, Roger – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2012
Knowledge of the equal sign as an indicator of mathematical equality is foundational to children's mathematical development and serves as a key link between arithmetic and algebra. The current findings reaffirmed a past finding that diverse items can be integrated onto a single scale, revealed the wide variability in children's knowledge of the…

Sample McMeeking, Laura B.; Orsi, Rebecca; Cobb, R. Brian – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2012
The effect of a 15- to 24-month in-service professional development (PD) program on state accountability mathematics test scores for middle school students was examined using a quasi-experimental design. Middle level mathematics teachers (n = 128) from 7 school districts and 64 middle schools volunteered for a PD sequence of content-oriented…

Griffin, Patrick; Callingham, Rosemary – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2006
Monitoring educational changes over many years is problematic when there are differences in curricula, the nature of the variables being measured, and the selection of participants. Rasch measurement techniques provide a procedure that enables each of these issues to be examined. Using archived and specially collected data, tests of numeracy…

Senk, Sharon L.; Thompson, Denisse R. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 2006
This Brief Report describes a secondary analysis of the solutions written by 306 second-year algebra students to four constructed-response items representative of content at this level. The type of solution (symbolic, graphical, or numerical) used most frequently varied by item. Curriculum effects were observed. Students studying from the second…

Hembree, Ray – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
Results of 120 studies were combined by meta-analysis to determine effects on mathematics test performance of factors other than knowledge of content. Conditions that enhanced performance included testwiseness training, praise, word problem pictures, and frequent testing. Conditions depressing or not affecting performance were also noted. (MNS)

Strauss, Sidney; Bichler, Efraim – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1988
Reports on a study to determine the development of children's understanding of seven properties of the arithmetic mean and to assess the effects of material used in the testing and the medium of presentation. Some differences were found in children's reasoning. No significant differences were found for materials or medium of presentation. (PK)

Carroll, William M. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1997
Reports on the results of the reform curriculum of the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project's elementary curriculum, Everyday Mathematics, for third-grade students. Results included the fact that only 2% of UCSMP students failed to meet state goals. UCSMP students also scored well in all mathematical areas including number skills and…

Cooper, Martin; Sweller, John – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1989
Examines secondary school students' ability to interpret representations of three-dimensional objects including prototypes of component, perspective drawings, orthogonal views, descriptions by coordinates, verbal descriptions, and verbal quasi-descriptions. Students were given four identical wooden cubes and asked to construct the objects. Reports…
