The agreement between the Bem Sex Role Inventory and Jackson's Personality Research Form ANDRO Scale in designating sex role--masculine, feminine, neutral, or androgynous--was examined for 158 male and female undergraduate students. To test the validity of the Bem Sex Role Inventory, 72 same-sex pairs of previously acquainted undergraduates rated themselves and partners on the BSRI as well as the Marlowe Crowne Social Desirability Scale. The results brought into question Bem's contention that masculinity and femininity are orthogonal constructs. (DM)

Differences in achievement motivation and sex-role orientation between female athletes and nonathletes were assessed using Mehrabian's Scale of Achieving Tendency and the Bem Sex-Role Inventory. Athletes exhibited higher achievement motivation. Also, high achievement motivation was related to androgynous and masculine sex roles. (Author/CM)
