Organizational Culture, Institutional Support, and Burnout of Student Media Leaders in Higher Education

Student media leaders on higher education campuses typically do more than just run a media outlet. From teaching coursework, grading, committee work and mentoring of students' student media leaders find themselves many times overworked and underappreciated. If not handled properly by administration these feelings could lead to burnout of the student media leader and an unhappiness with the work that they are doing. Burnout, which is divided by into three subsets, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment, has a negative effect, not only on the person but on the institution as well. In this quantitative research study data was collected from 44 student media leaders to see what roles organization and institutional support have in helping or hurting student media leaders and their feelings of burnout towards the institution that they work for. The results of this study showed that respondents who saw their institutions as more of a clan culture saw a reduction in emotional exhaustion. However, it also showed that student media leaders who viewed their institutions as more of market culture saw a reduction of personal accomplishment which is in direct contrast with other studies that have been done in this area. Also, this study found no correlation between institutional support, either monetary and non-monetary and any of the burnout subset. The results of this study will hopefully lead to more studies about how organizational culture, institutional support and burnout could be linked at higher education institutions.
