Barron, Roderick W.; Baron, Jonathan – Child Development, 1977
Children in grades 1 to 8 were given picture-word pairs and were asked to say whether the items rhymed, in a sound task, or "went together," in a meaning task. It was concluded that children can get meaning from printed words without the use of an intermediate phonemic code. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Elementary Education, Mediation Theory, Semantics

Meacham, John A. – Child Development, 1978
A sample of 48 preschoolers were asked to ride a tricycle appropriately following commands presented at 3-second intervals. Half of the children were also asked to repeat the commands aloud. Results are presented for frequency of inappropriate motor activity and reaction times. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Mediation Theory, Preschool Children, Psychomotor Skills, Reaction Time

Fitzgerald, Joseph M. – Child Development, 1977
This study assessed the predictive utility of a classification-based model versus a representational memory-based model to account for the effects of verbal training on the acquired equivalence and distinctiveness paradigms. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Classification, Discrimination Learning, Mediation Theory, Memory

Tinsley, Virginia S.; Waters, Harriet Salatas – Child Development, 1982
Two experiments replicate and extend Luria's (1959, 1961) findings on the development of verbal self-regulation during early childhood. Results support Luria's hypothesis that overt verbalizations facilitate control of motor behavior in young children and that language can play an active and integrative role in the development of behavioral and…

Bronson, Gordon – Child Development, 1978
A reanalysis of first-year longitudinal data suggests that infants' reactions to a stranger up through the middle of the first year are attributed to a wariness of the unfamiliar while by 9 months, learned aversions which have their roots in prior disturbing experiences may become an important additional determinant. (Author/JMB)

Wallace, Stephen A.; And Others – Child Development, 1978
Descriptors: Mediation Theory, Motor Development, Motor Reactions, Preschool Children

Hayes, Donald S.; Schulze, Sharon A. – Child Development, 1977
To determine whether young children consistently employ a visual code for remembering pictures in serial recall, 36 preschool children were asked to match picture lists composed of visually similar, phonetically similar, or unrelated items. (JMB)
Descriptors: Mediation Theory, Pictorial Stimuli, Preschool Children, Recall (Psychology)

Borkowski, John G.; And Others – Child Development, 1976
The ability of nursery school and first-grade children to learn and transfer a mediational strategy utilizing prepositional relationships between paired-associate objects was investigated under several strategy training conditions. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Elementary School Students, Mediation Theory, Paired Associate Learning, Preschool Children

Pike, Ruth; Olson, David R. – Child Development, 1977
Developmental changes in 5- to 7-year-old children's mental representation of addition and subtraction events were examined by means of the response times required to answer more or less questions. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Addition, Age Differences, Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation

West, Helen; Abravanel, Eugene – Child Development, 1972
Results clearly demonstrated the existence of perceptual sets in children under 4 years. The interpretation of findings suggests a process whereby the present method was successful in creating the mediating conditions necessary for a perceptual set. (Authors)
Descriptors: Cognitive Processes, Concept Formation, Data Analysis, Mediation Theory

Overton, Willis F.; Jackson, Joseph P. – Child Development, 1973
Major finding of this study demonstrates clear support for the proposed developmental sequence of gestural representation. (Authors)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Imagination

Asarnow, Joan Rosenbaum; Meichenbaum, Donald – Child Development, 1979
Investigates the relative efficacy of three training procedures in improving serial recall in kindergarten children who either showed no tendency to rehearse or rehearsed inconsistently at a serial recall pretest. Self-instructional training, an induced rehearsal procedure, and a practice control condition comprised the three training procedures.…

Wollman, Warren; And Others – Child Development, 1979
Inference tasks emphasizing the acceptance of lack of closure (ALC), memory, and hypothetico-deductive reasoning were administered to 67 males and 74 females ranging in age from 5 to 12 years. Results suggest that the relationship of ALC to age is mediated by memory development rather than by logical development. (JMB)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Cognitive Development, Elementary Education, Elementary School Students

Turnure, James; And Others – Child Development, 1976
Compared six experimental conditions to determine whether specific formats of interrogatives would be instrumental in inducing the generation of effective verbal mediators for 30 nonretarded and 60 educable mentally retarded children. (Author/JMB)
Descriptors: Elementary School Students, Handicapped Children, Mediation Theory, Mental Retardation

Levine, John M.; And Others – Child Development, 1982
Reports two studies investigating how performance information affects interpersonal attraction in children. In both experiments children worked on perceptual problems in simulated groups, received feedback about their own and other group members' performance, and then indicated their desire to interact with selected group members in various…
