Latif, A.; Heinz, P.; Cook, R. – Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, 2002
Retrospective analysis of the full blood count and, when available, serum ferritin measurements of 96 children (52 with autism and 44 with Asperger syndrome) found six autistic children had iron deficiency and 12 of the 23 autistic children with serum ferritin measures were iron deficient. Iwata, Brian A.; And Others – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1990
A measure, the Self-Injury Trauma Scale, is described for classifying and quantifying surface tissue damage. The scale permits differentiation of self-injurious behavior according to topography, location of the injury on the body, type of injury, number of injuries, and estimate of severity. High interrater reliability has been found. (Author/DB)

Hall, Joseph W.; Grose, John H. – Journal of Speech and Hearing Research, 1994
This study investigated comodulation masking release (CMR) in 42 children (ages 5 to 10) with a history of otitis media with effusion (OME) and 19 control children with no history of ear disease. Results indicated that monotic CMRs were reduced in children with hearing loss due to OME and these CMRs remained abnormally small for several months.…

Geyer, Lesley Austin; McGowan, Joy Silverman – Infants and Young Children, 1995
Various issues related to positioning infants and children with central nervous system dysfunction in order to conduct videofluoroscopic swallowing function studies are discussed. Extensive illustrations demonstrate solutions to specific problems. (DB)

Eldredge, Lynnette; Salamy, Alan – Child Development, 1988
Study evaluates the functioning of the central nervous system (CNS) of 15 neonates born at-risk for neurological sequelae and 15 healthy controls. Lazoritz, Stephen; Baldwin, Sandra; Kini, Narendra – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1997
This study examined recent literature describing the Shaken Infant Syndrome and compared it to John Caffey's original descriptions in 1946. Caine, M. P.; And Others – International Journal of Rehabilitation Research, 1996
Several interrelated issues pertaining to the measurement of spinal curvature are discussed, including the inherent limitations of the kyphotic index, the most widely used indicator in the evaluation of kyphosis. The paper suggests use of the Flexicurve to quantify spinal posture, suggests modifications to the Flexicurve, and presents results on…

Lazebnik, Rina; And Others – Child Abuse & Neglect: The International Journal, 1994
This study investigated how 99 children who were examined for suspected sexual abuse (SSA) perceived their own medical evaluation experiences. Although most children did not perceive their SSA examination to be strongly negative, they did report greater fear than for an ordinary doctor visit. (Author/DB)

Myers, Beverly; Pueschel, Siegfried M. – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1995
In a population of 425 individuals with Down's syndrome, 5 persons (1.2%) were identified as having Tourette's disorder. The lack of interrelationship between Down's syndrome and Tourette's disorder argues against an atypical Tourette's disorder. Diagnoses of tardive Tourette's disorder were based on absence of family history of Tourette's, late…

Rickarby, Geoff; And Others – Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 1991
This paper reviews Asperger Syndrome, a form of developing autism with average intelligence, in 12 boys (ages 5 to late teens). Examination of family histories, medical history and findings, obstetric, and neonatal data found no common environmental factors and supports a brain damage hypothesis. (DB)

Kastner, Ted; And Others – American Journal on Mental Retardation, 1992
This study of 40 patients with mental retardation receiving carbamazepine found hyponatremia in only 5 percent of these patients and found a statistically, but not clinically, significant decrease in serum sodium levels in patients receiving anticonvulsant polytherapy. Results support the use of this drug with patients with mental retardation and…
