Eberhard-Moscicka, Aleksandra K.; Jost, Lea B.; Raith, Margit; Maurer, Urs – Developmental Science, 2015
During reading acquisition children learn to recognize orthographic stimuli and link them to phonology and semantics. The present study investigated neurocognitive processes of learning to read after one year of schooling. We aimed to elucidate the cognitive processes underlying neural tuning for print that has been shown to play an important role…

Lovett, Maureen W.; Frijters, Jan C.; Wolf, Maryanne; Steinbach, Karen A.; Sevcik, Rose A.; Morris, Robin D. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2017
Across multiple schools and sites, the impact of grade-at-intervention was evaluated for children at risk or meeting criteria for reading disabilities. A multiple-component reading intervention with demonstrated efficacy was offered to small groups of children in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade. In a quasi-experimental design, 172 children received the…

Brunswick, Nicola; Martin, G. Neil; Rippon, Georgina – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 2012
This longitudinal study examined the contribution of phonological awareness, phonological memory, and visuospatial ability to reading development in 142 English-speaking children from the start of kindergarten to the middle of Grade 2. Partial cross-lagged analyses revealed significant relationships between early performance on block design and…

Kampwirth, Thomas J.; MacKenzie, Karen – Educational Research Quarterly, 1989
The relationship between modality styles and reading achievement was studied for 51 first graders given 2 subtests of the Swassing-Barbe Modality Index, 2 subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities, and 2 tests of nonsense words. There was no significant interaction between modality preference and reading achievement. (SLD)

Weed, Keri; Ryan, Ellen Bouchard – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1985
Investigates the relationship between auditory and visual processing modality and strategy instruction in first- and second-grade children. Determines sentence strategy to be effective for both auditory and visual processing. (HOD)
Descriptors: Auditory Perception, Grade 1, Grade 2, Imagery
McDaniel, Ernest – 1971
The rationale and development of a new series of motion picture tests of perceptual abilities of young children are described, and preliminary data regarding their reliability and validity are presented. The data suggests that the film tests are promising new perceptual measurement instruments. (MS)

Entwisle, Doris R.; Huggins, W. H. – Child Development, 1973
Paper calls attention to the extent of iconic information processing in young children and presents data on children's ability to recall iconic information. (Authors)

McNinch, George – Reading Research Quarterly, 1971
Suggests that preinstructional evaluation in the areas of mental age, auditory memory, letter names, and the use of context-auditory clues would aid in making predictive, diagnostic judgments as to later reading achievement. (VJ)

Wagner, Barry T.; Jackson, Heather M. – Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research, 2006
Purpose: This study examined the cognitive demands of 2 selection techniques in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), direct selection, and visual linear scanning, by determining the memory retrieval abilities of typically developing children when presented with fixed communication displays. Method: One hundred twenty typical children…

Soderman, Anne K.; Chhikara, Sudha; Hsiu-Ching, Chen; Kuo, Elaine – International Journal of Early Childhood, 1999
Examined sex differences in perceptual and cognitive abilities and in reading skills among 922 first graders in the United States, India, and Taiwan. Found that girls scored significantly higher than boys on reading skills, visual memory, directionality, and ability to track nonsymbolic figures. Urban children outscored rural children on four…

Cyphers, Lisa H.; And Others – Intelligence, 1989
Genetic involvement in specific verbal and spatial abilities and memory and perceptual speed was assessed using 163 adopted and 142 non-adopted 7-year-olds and their biological, adoptive, and non-adoptive parents. Results imply the existence of some genetic continuity from the early school years to adulthood for verbal and spatial abilities. (TJH)
