Between Global Forces and Local Values: A Bakhtinian Perspective on Mexican Mathematics Education Research
Educational Studies in Mathematics, v119 n2 p311-333 2025
This study examines the characteristics of research papers published by Mexican mathematics educators from 2012 to 2021, focusing on the influence of global and local forces on academic production. Drawing on Mikhail Bakhtin's concepts, we view mathematics education research as a socio-ideological language, where each paper functions as an "utterance" shaped by specific historical and social contexts. The analysis reveals an increasing publication trend, often motivated by institutional pressures. Moreover, the Spanish language emerges as a centrifugal force that influences publication choices within the region. We argue that dominant centripetal forces encourage specific research topics and theoretical frameworks, potentially creating an authoritative discourse that may overshadow local educational concerns and limit intellectual diversity. By incorporating Bakhtin's notions of centrifugal and centripetal forces, heteroglossia, and authoritative language, this study emphasizes the need to balance global academic norms with local research needs to cultivate a more inclusive and diverse field in mathematics education.
