Thompson, H. Bradford – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1983
This column is designed to share BASIC sub-programs and to show how subroutines and function subprograms may be used to simplify and organize BASIC programing. The yes-no function is defined and programs presented, followed by the multiple-branch function and adding a HELP feature. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Programs, Computer Science, Functions (Mathematics), Instruction

Smith, Richard L. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Seven indexes to computer-oriented literature are reviewed, examining services offered, type of literature indexed, format, source, hardware needed, and cost. Each item reviewed can currently be obtained for $100 per year or less. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science, Elementary Secondary Education, Indexes, Microcomputers

Mandell, Alan; Lucking, Robert – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Discusses artificial intelligence, its definitions, and potential applications. Provides listings of Logo and BASIC versions for programs along with REM statements needed to make modifications for use with Apple computers. (RT)
Descriptors: Artificial Intelligence, Computer Literacy, Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Science

Winer, Jane L.; And Others – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1988
Reports on performance aspects of educators' person-environment congruence as defined by Holland's occupational classification system. Concludes that the majority were of the Social, Conventional, or Enterprising types and oriented toward non-classroom use of computer literacy developed in the course. (RT)
Descriptors: Case Studies, College Mathematics, Computer Assisted Instruction, Computer Literacy

Mandell, Alan – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1982
Recommendations regarding literacy and the responsibilities of science educators are reviewed. The opportunity for pioneering, base-line research studies on the use of microcomputers in the classroom is viewed to exist. Significant contributions science education can make to computer literacy are noted. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Computers, Educational Technology, Elementary Secondary Education

Hall, Gene E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1981
Reviews findings from change process research connecting current issues in the microcomputer movement. Concludes with a call for descriptive studies emphasizing development of hypotheses and theory building, particularly in further research and development efforts around software and implementation issues. (MP)
Descriptors: Computer Science, Curriculum Design, Curriculum Development, Educational Research

Baird, William E. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1983
Included are abstracts of selected papers presented at the National Educational Computing Conference held in Baltimore in June 1983. The nine reports discuss varies computer uses at several levels, and includes a study of children's learning processes and software descriptions. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Programs, Computer Science Education, Conference Papers

Enochs, Larry G. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1986
Surveyed the entire middle school population of a rural-suburban school district to determine the general attitudes of students toward computers. Findings are reported for differences in general attitudes toward computers between boys and girls, seventh and eighth-graders, and those who had computers and those who did not. (JN)
Descriptors: Computer Science Education, Educational Research, Grade 7, Grade 8

Enochs, Larry G. – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1984
Examined effects of beginning computer programing instruction, sex, and home computers on the attitudes of fifth-grade students (N=49). Results of this pilot study showed higher attitudes following instruction and no differences between the sexes or between those who had computers and those who did not. (JN)
Descriptors: Attitude Change, Computer Science Education, Educational Research, Elementary School Students

Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 1982
Abstracts from eight papers presented at the June 1982 National Educational Computing Consortium (NECC '82) conference in Kansas City, Missouri are provided. It is noted copies of the conference proceedings may be purchased from the Department of Computer Science, University of Iowa. The papers examine a variety of educational aspects. (MP)
