Hummel, Jeffrey W.; Balcom, F. William – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1984
The article describes ways in which learning disabled students can use simple database management and word processing programs as active users. Involvement in these types of computer applications allows the user to be an active, creative communicator. (CL)

Creskey, Marguerite Nelson – International Journal of Instructional Media, 1992
Describes implementation of a word processor in an elementary school, focusing on instructional strategies used with learning-disabled students aged 7-13. Objectives, materials, activities, evaluation, and rewards are summarized for six modules covering hardware, disk care, software, initializing and saving on disk, word processing modes, and…

Degnan, Sarah C.; Hummel, Jeffrey W. – Technological Horizons in Education, 1985
Points out that word processing can be integrated into special education programs and that teachers can gain confidence in their ability to teach word processing to special education students. Inservice programs and effects of word processing instruction on special education students are among the topics addressed. (DH)

Collins, Terence G.; Price, Lynda – Learning Disabilities Focus, 1986
Word processing software can accommodate the writing deficiencies of high-functioning, learning-disabled college students, but documentation frequently needs revision for increased user-friendliness, better instructional layout, less complex syntax, and repetition of key concepts. A sample revision of one program is presented, focusing on switch…

Arms, Valarie M. – Educational Technology, 1984
Describes the strategies used by a technical writing teacher who encouraged a dyslexic university engineering student to use a microcomputer as an aid in composition writing, and discusses how a word processing program was used to make the writing process easier and increase the student's self-confidence. (MBR)

Collins, Terence; Price, Lynda – 1986
As part of a three-year federally funded research program intended to shed light on the writing processes of learning disabled college-aged writers (with special emphasis on the use of technology in creating workable mainstreamed curricula), this paper records in an interview format the responses of students to the program, including word…

Collins, Terence; Price, Lynda – 1986
Since word-processing applications of microcomputers show a great deal of promise in helping learning disabled adults overcome writing problems, care should be given in selecting the software that they use. In considering what shared needs must be addressed when selecting word-processing software, it is necessary to isolate some of these needs,…

Maddux, Cleborne D. – Educational Computer, 1984
Discusses two uses of microcomputers for learning disabled (LD) children--one uses them to do traditional things more efficiently; the other includes involvement of LD children with computer programing, particularly LOGO, and use of simulation and word processing programs. Reasons why LOGO is ideal for LD children are identified. (MBR)

Majsterek, David J. – Intervention in School and Clinic, 1990
The article addresses use of microcomputer-based word processing for students with writing disabilities. The research is briefly reviewed, and four guidelines for choosing word processing software are offered, as are principles for teaching keyboarding. (DB)

Yau, Maria; And Others – 1990
Fifty-six Toronto (Ontario, Canada) seventh-grade and eighth-grade learning-disabled students whose handwriting was very difficult to read were randomly assigned to either an experimental or comparison group. Experimental group students were loaned a portable computer to use freely at school and at home during the course of the experiment.…

Hine, Mary Sue; And Others – Journal of Special Education, 1990
Eleven learning-handicapped students, ages 8-13, generated text at microcomputers both alone and as members of dyads. Examination of mechanical errors revealed a lower error rate in the dyad condition compared to working alone. The relationship between error monitoring and the social interaction needed for collaboration is discussed. (Author/JDD)
