Two high schools serving the same community are compared in order to examine how control/strain variables predict delinquency in two contexts. The school context characterized by a broader definition of success, more specialized discipline, and predictable supervision was found to have lower levels of delinquency for both genders. Three models reflecting stages of substance abuse were tested using path analysis with subsamples of 626 to 850 subjects. Models indicate that measures of religiosity and religious conservatism help explain substance use. Results suggest that explanations of substance abuse can be enhanced through models using stage of drug involvement. (SLD)
