Street, James A.; Dabrowska, Ewa – Applied Psycholinguistics, 2014
This article provides experimental evidence for the role of lexically specific representations in the processing of passive sentences and considerable education-related differences in comprehension of the passive construction. The experiment measured response time and decision accuracy of participants with high and low academic attainment using an…

Frohlich, Maria – 1976
Ten case studies of adults learning a second language are reported and analyzed in an effort to identify a variety of learning strategies. The superordinate strategies that were discovered lent themselves to the development of a tentative language learning model, which is set forth as a chart. The model is consistently confirmed by the various…

Peer reviewedTrammell, Robert L. – Language and Speech, 1990
Ten college students and 10 Ph.D.s read aloud 30 unfamiliar English words, 2 to 5 syllables in length of Greek, Latin, and Germanic origin. Each response was compared to the rule predicted, dictionary prescribed, and most frequent pronunciation for the word. Models of reading are examined in light of the results. (71 references) (JL)

Peer reviewedAnderson, Roger W. – Language Learning, 1978
Offers a model for research in second language acquisition. The model is based on implicational analysis and attempts to account for individuals and groups, systematicity and variability. An analysis of the use of grammatical morphemes by Spanish-speaking students of English illustrates the model. (Author/AM)

Maekawa, Junko; Storkel, Holly L. – Journal of Child Language, 2006
The current study attempts to differentiate effects of phonotactic probability (i.e. the likelihood of occurrence of a sound sequence), neighbourhood density (i.e. the number of phonologically similar words), word frequency, and word length on expressive vocabulary development by young children. Naturalistic conversational samples for three…

Peer reviewedGardner, R. C.; Tremblay, Paul F.; Masgoret, Anne-Marie – Modern Language Journal, 1997
Investigates numerous individual difference measures to determine their underlying dimensions, to contrast their predictive validities and to evaluate their contributions in a causal model of second language acquisition. Findings indicate that substantial links exist among affective measures and achievement. (56 references) (Author/CK)

Peer reviewedSang, F.; And Others – Language Testing, 1986
Questions the plausibility of the unitary competence hypothesis, which assumes a universal structure of second language competence. New evidence, showing divergent structures in language ability subgroups and different influences of teaching styles on different language components, better supports a multidimensional model of foreign language…
