Increasing a Sense of Community in Campus Residences: An Action Research Study
Alex Ryan Hart
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Azusa Pacific University
The purpose of this action research study was to increase a sense of community in the upperclass student residence halls at my institution by creating a new residence hall programming model centered on large-scale programs on various topics, social interactions between resident advisors and residents, and smaller-scale social programs. Scholarly research on social connectedness (Schreiner, 2010), sense of belonging(Strayhorn, 2012), and sense of community (McMillan & Chavis, 1986) formed the conceptual framework of the programming model. Resident advisors and professional staff reported positive success of the new programming model with suggestions for future changes. The implications of this research support the development of a programming model to create a sense of community for upperclass students in residence halls.
