This article traces changes in mathematics teaching, stresses the importance of mathematics in the lives of today's children, and gives some suggestions for new teaching methods. Sixty low-ability eighth-grade students in two intact classes were given "modern mathematics" and traditional drill treatments. Results revealed no significant differences between groups on attitudes toward mathematics or mathematics achievement. (CP)

In a study of 1050 elementary teachers it was found that on a test of mathematical understanding that teachers did progressively better (significant beyond .05 level) with: (1) more years of high school mathematics, (2) more college mathematics courses, and (3) exposure to "modern mathematics."
