Simmons, Cyril; Wade, Winnie – Journal of Moral Education, 1983
A 1981 study confirmed many of the findings of a 1968 study which examined the values of fourth year pupils in an English comprehensive school. For example, in both studies, students rejected ideal models in favor of "myself" choices. (Author/RM)

Perry, Constance M.; McIntire, Walter G. – Adolescence, 1995
Found that early adolescents use various models to make moral decisions. These include care (wishing others not to suffer), justice (decisions made according to principles), and narrowly concerned or selfish. Males and females used all three modes, with males being more likely to choose the narrowly concerned mode. (RJM)

Wark, Gillian R.; Krebs, Dennis L. – Developmental Psychology, 1996
Investigated the effects of gender, gender role, and type of moral dilemma on moral maturity and orientation of university students. Found that females were more consistent than males in moral stage; males were more consistent in moral orientation. Findings suggest that a more interactional model of moral judgment than the models of L. Kohlberg…

Blake, Catherine; Cohen, Henri – 1984
According to Gilligan (1982) there are two different orientations for describing moral development: a justice orientation characteristic of males, and a care orientation characteristic of females. Gilligan claims that the care orientation is confounded with the justice orientation in Kohlberg's (1983) conceptualization of Stage 3: mutual…

Smetana, Judith G. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1984
Discusses problems in Pratt, Golding, and Hunter's investigation (in this issue) of two propositions central to Gilligan's (1982) thesis on the mismeasurement of women's moral orientation and development. Describes research addressing the problems and indicates directions for further research. (RH)

Sichel, Betty A. – Journal of Moral Education, 1985
Examined is Carol Gilligan's thesis that men and women use different moral languages to resolve moral dilemmas, i.e., women speak a language of caring and responsibility, and men speak a language of rights and justice. Her thesis is not grounded with adequate philosophical assumptions. (Author/RM)

Skoe, Eva E.; Marcia, James E. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1991
A measure of moral reasoning based on a care ethic was developed. Moral thought that is based on care may more accurately reflect female development than the traditional justice-based morality. The relationship between the measure and women's ego identity was investigated. It is concluded that women's development of moral reasoning and concept of…

Lollis, Susan; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1996
Investigated Gilligan's hypothesis on the origin of moral orientation through analysis of sibling-conflict interactions in 40 dual-parent families with 2 children, ages 2 and 4. Found only partial support for hypothesis in that, regardless of the child's gender, mothers used significantly more care than justice orientation, whereas fathers used…

Socoski, Patrick M. – 1984
This paper explores the issue of sex bias in a contemporary major theory of moral development, cognitive moral theory. It explains critical reactions by Carol Gilligan and others questioning whether cognitive moral theory adequately accounts for female moral reasoning and behavior in its theory and research procedures. Several general…

Bradt, Jean M. – 1985
A pertinent problem in the area of moral development is whether most people can distinguish moral from conventional issues. Some research has shown children and adolescents consider moral (intrinsic) transgressions more serious than violations of convention. To expand this research by examining in detail the role of intrinsicality in moral…

Flynn, Timothy M. – Early Child Development and Care, 1984
Results indicate that preschool children are capable of making moral judgments in both apology-restitution and guilt-innocence test contexts. Age and sex are significantly related to both moral judgment measures, while intelligence and parent occupation are unrelated to both measures. (Author/RH)
Descriptors: Age Differences, Employment Level, Intelligence, Moral Development

Walker, Lawrence J. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1997
Challenges Carol Gilligan's (1982) assertion that there are two fundamentally different and gender-related orientations to morality, namely a male justice orientation and a female care orientation. Argues that Gilligan's view that these orientations are logically and psychologically incompatible and that their developmental origins are in early…

White, Charles B. – International Journal of Aging and Human Development, 1988
Examined role of age and education in adult moral reasoning. Interviewed 195 adults between ages of 19 and 82 using standard Kohlberg moral dilemmas. Subjects' education levels ranged from 3 to 25 years. Found no overall significant effect for age, no significant effect for gender, and significant effect for education. (Author/NB)

Gregg, Virginia; And Others – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1994
Investigated moral judgment delay in adolescent delinquents based on sex differences and specific moral value areas. Found that delinquents of both sexes were, on average, developmentally delayed in moral judgment, particularly on values related to the law. However, they rated values such as promise keeping, helping others, and saving life as…

Cultural and Gender Differences in Moral Judgment: A Study of Mexican Americans and Anglo-Americans.

Gump, Linda S.; Baker, Richard C.; Roll, Samuel – Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences, 2000
Forty Mexican American and 40 Anglo American college students completed the Moral Justification Scale, containing moral dilemmas involving "care" (interpersonal) and justice considerations. Care scores were higher for females than males, and for Mexican Americans than Anglo Americans. No differences were obtained on the justice measure.…
