Walker, Joshua D.; Robinson, Daniel H. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2023
Two-stage testing (TST) involves individual testing followed by taking the same test in teams. Previously, Vogler and Robinson ("The Journal of Experimental Education," 84(4), 787-803, 2016) found that TST facilitated individual performance. The present study addressed methodological limitations in the Vogler and Robinson study in two…

Papenberg, Martin; Diedenhofen, Birk; Musch, Jochen – Journal of Experimental Education, 2021
Testwiseness may introduce construct-irrelevant variance to multiple-choice test scores. Presenting response options sequentially has been proposed as a potential solution to this problem. In an experimental validation, we determined the psychometric properties of a test based on the sequential presentation of response options. We created a strong…

Shin, Jinnie; Bulut, Okan; Gierl, Mark J. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2020
The arrangement of response options in multiple-choice (MC) items, especially the location of the most attractive distractor, is considered critical in constructing high-quality MC items. In the current study, a sample of 496 undergraduate students taking an educational assessment course was given three test forms consisting of the same items but…

DiBattista, David; Sinnige-Egger, Jo-Anne; Fortuna, Glenda – Journal of Experimental Education, 2014
The authors assessed the effects of using "none of the above" as an option in a 40-item, general-knowledge multiple-choice test administered to undergraduate students. Examinees who selected "none of the above" were given an incentive to write the correct answer to the question posed. Using "none of the above" as the…

Leppink, Jimmie; Broers, Nick J.; Imbos, Tjaart; van der Vleuten, Cees P. M.; Berger, Martijn P. F. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2014
Contrary to classical problem-based learning, in guided problem-based learning, the learning goals are predetermined by the instructor--on the basis of a detailed decomposition of the subject matter to be studied--to activate prior knowledge and to structure self-study and subsequent group discussion. This study investigated the effects of…

Bonner, Sarah M. – Journal of Experimental Education, 2013
Although test scores from similar tests in multiple choice and constructed response formats are highly correlated, equivalence in rankings may mask differences in substantive strategy use. The author used an experimental design and participant think-alouds to explore cognitive processes in mathematical problem solving among undergraduate examinees…

DiBattista, David; Gosse, Leanne; Sinnige-Egger, Jo-Anne; Candale, Bela; Sargeson, Kim – Journal of Experimental Education, 2009
The authors examined how the grading scheme affects learning and students' reactions to the Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IFAT), an answer form providing immediate feedback on multiple-choice questions. Undergraduate students (N = 141) took a general-knowledge multiple-choice test of low, medium, or high difficulty. They used the IFAT…

Hamdan, M. A.; Krutchkoff, R. G. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1975
The separation level of grades on a multiple-choice examination as a quantitative probabilistic criterion for correct classification of students by the examination was introduced by Krutchoff. (Author)

Strang, Harold R.; Rust, James O. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1973
The major purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of non-cueing immediate knowledge upon answering academic questions constructed so as to minimize intrinsic knowledge of ongoing accuracy. (Author)

Vidler, Derek; Hansen, Richard – Journal of Experimental Education, 1980
Relationships among patterns of answer changing and item characteristics on multiple-choice tests are discussed. Results obtained were similar to those found in previous studies but pointed to further relationships among these variables. (Author/GK)

Hamdan, M. A. – Journal of Experimental Education, 1979
The distribution theory underlying corrections for guessing is analyzed, and the probability distributions of the random variables are derived. The correction in grade, based on random guessing of unknown answers, is compared with corrections based on educated guessing. (Author/MH)

Blumberg, Phyllis – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
The development of four parallel multiple-choice tests using Guttman's facet design analysis is discussed. A mapping sentence was used to specify a test blueprint. The examinations were found to be parallel when actually used. (Author/GK)

Green, Kathy – Journal of Experimental Education, 1981
Item-response changing as a function of test anxiety was investigated. Data supported the hypothesis that high test-anxious students make more item-response changes than low test-anxious students. Also, both high- and low-anxious students profit to a similar extent proportionally from answer changing. (Author/GK)
