Asha K. Jitendra; Barbara Dougherty; Victoria Sanchez; Luisana Suchilt – TEACHING Exceptional Children, 2024
Developing and supporting understanding of the meaning of multiplication and multiplicative relationships in students with mathematics learning disabilities requires carefully designed instruction that emphasizes strategic representation use. This article discusses three ways in which teachers can incorporate multiple representations within…

Marc Husband; Lisa Lunney Borden; Evan Throop Robinson – in education, 2023
This article explores the role that gestures play in the development of mathematical understanding. Using Pirie Kieren's (1994) notion of image making and Lunney Borden's (2011) idea of verbing mathematics, we share two examples of how students respond to teacher requests to demonstrate what they know about arrays.

Thurtell, Elise; Forrester, Tricia; Chinnappan, Mohan – Mathematics Teacher Education and Development, 2019
A deep understanding of fraction concepts and operations is necessary if pre-service teachers (PSTs) are to present the concepts in multiple forms to learners. Such an understanding needs to be grounded in rich conceptual knowledge. In the present study, we explore the development of this understanding by supporting a cohort of 103 PSTs, who had…

Toluk-Ucar, Zulbiye; Bozkus, Figen – International Journal for Mathematics Teaching and Learning, 2018
The purpose of this study was to investigate how prospective elementary school mathematics teachers and elementary school students' ability to distinguish proportional situations from nonproportional situations differ or are alike. Participants of the study were 319 prospective primary and middle school teachers and 320 elementary school students…

Coles, Alf – For the Learning of Mathematics, 2014
Drawing on the work of Gattegno, it is suggested that a powerful way of teaching mathematics is to introduce symbols as relationships between visible or tangible resources. The symbols are abstract (formal) from the beginning and yet there are concrete resources to support their use. Drawing on data from a research project in primary schools in…

Holmes, Bill – Mathematics Teaching, 2010
The author has been prompted to write this article about finger multiplication for a number of reasons. Firstly there are a number of related articles in past issues of "Mathematics Teaching" ("MT") which have connections to this algorithm. Secondly, very few of his primary teaching students and professional colleagues appear to be aware of the…

Poncy, Brian C.; Skinner, Christopher H.; Axtell, Philip K. – Psychology in the Schools, 2010
A multiple-probe-across-problem-sets (tasks) design was used to evaluate the effects of the Detect, Practice, and Repair (DPR) on multiplication-fact fluency development in seven third-grade students nominated by their teacher as needing remediation. DPR is a multicomponent intervention and begins with a group-administered, metronome-paced…

Oesterle, Susan, Ed.; Allan, Darien, Ed. – Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group, 2015
This submission contains the Proceedings of the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), held at the Université de Moncton in Moncton, New Brunswick. The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning. The aims of…

What Works Clearinghouse, 2010
This paper presents an updated WWC (What Works Clearinghouse) Review of the Article "Culture and the Interaction of Student Ethnicity with Reward Structure in Group Learning". The study examined the effects of different reward systems used in group learning situations on the math skills of African-American and White students. The…

Isiksal, Mine; Cakiroglu, Erdinc – Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, 2011
The purpose of this study was to investigate prospective mathematics teachers' knowledge of common conceptions and misconceptions that sixth and seventh grade students had about multiplication of fractions. In addition, prospective teachers' knowledge of the sources of these misconceptions and strategies they knew to overcome these misconceptions…

De Brauwer, Jolien; Fias, Wim – Developmental Psychology, 2009
The authors investigated the performance on simple multiplication and division problems of 8-year-old children longitudinally to determine the developmental trajectories of both operations. Twice a year, during 2 consecutive school years, children performed a multiplication and division verification task and a number-matching task. All effects…

Ashcraft, Mark H.; Christy, Kelly S. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1995
Tabulation of addition and multiplication fact frequencies in arithmetic texts for grades one through six showed that large facts, with operands larger than five, occurred only half as frequently as those with operands in the two-to-five range. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed. (MKR)

Lombardo, Thomas W.; Drabman, Ronald S. – Academic Therapy, 1985
Two procedures significantly improved multiplication skills in six students (nine to 12 years old) with learning disabilities. The procedures were writing out multiplication problems and saying problems aloud while working. (CL)
