In multiunit high schools such as those in New Jersey's North Hunterdon district, the department chairperson serves as an intradisciplinary Learning Community Leader (intra-LCL). The multielective portion of the school's curriculum in each subject area remains the responsibility of this person, while individual learning communities determine their own curriculum. Learning communities turn to the intra-LCL primarily for resource assistance and for coordination of the learning community program with classes and teachers operating outside the learning community. The intra-LCL can in fact operate as a learning community teacher and, in this role, is responsible to the interdisciplinary Learning Community Leader (inter-LCL), who is charged with budgetary and scheduling duties within the community.
