Of 58 colleges of pharmacy surveyed, 80 percent required a communications skills course for undergraduates. Course descriptions vary widely in format, time allotment, content, and types of practice exercises. Most are taught as a specific course, by pharmacy faculty, and in the third or fourth year. A study of the demographic characteristics and management styles of the deans, associate deans, and assistant deans of U.S schools of pharmacy found that about 23 percent preferred a high people- high task-management orientation and 26 percent preferred a low people- low task-management orientation. One in five pharmacy students is communication apprehensive (CA), similar to the general population. A third of those surveyed were shy, and about 14 percent were both high CA and shy. The more anxiety a communication type presents, the less importance the student attaches to it. Systematic desensitization is recommended. (MSE)

A survey of 72 pharmacy schools shows 22 percent of the schools had no geriatric coursework, 35 percent offered only courses in which the geriatric content averaged under 12 percent of course content, and 43 percent offered courses that focused primarily on geriatrics, most including a major clinical component.
