Learning Interrupted: Global Snapshot of Climate-Related School Disruptions in 2024
UNICEF
Climate change is deepening the global learning crisis and threatening children's ability to learn. Nearly half the world's children--approximately 1 billion--live in countries with extremely high risks of climate and environmental shocks. This snapshot presents an analysis of country-specific school disruptions caused by climate hazards in 85 countries from January to December 2024. This analysis defines 'school disruption' as any event that leads to a suspension of regular school activities. Countries impacted by climate hazards in 2024 were identified by consulting the Emergency Events Database (EMDAT) and the Assessment Capacities Project (ACAPS) archive. A total of 181 climate events were recorded in 2024. Within these occurrences, school disruptions were verified from situation reports and press releases by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), ReliefWeb, along with additional media outlets. This search identified 85 countries and 119 climate hazards that led to school disruptions. UNICEF's approach to mitigating the effects of climate change on children's education includes four strategic pillars: (1) greening learning and skills; (2) youth-led climate advocacy and action; (3) greening capacities of system; and (4) greener and safer learning facilities. UNICEF's promising practices and scalable solutions in three countries are highlighted to show how collaborations with governments, civil society, the private sector, and teachers and young people can work to inform climate policy.
