Matson, Johnny L.; Kozlowski, Alison M.; Worley, Julie A.; Shoemaker, Mary E.; Sipes, Megan; Horovitz, Max – Research in Developmental Disabilities: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2011
An extensive literature on the causes of challenging behaviors has been developed, primarily in the applied behavior analysis literature. One hundred and seventy-three empirical studies were reviewed where functional assessment serves as the primary method of identifying these causes. Most of the studies were able to identify a clear function or…

McComas, Jennifer J. – Behavior Analyst, 2009
In the context of instructional demands, compliance and problem behavior can be considered concurrent operants. Of applied interest is increasing one response (i.e., compliance) while decreasing the other (i.e., problem behavior). Strategic arrangement of reinforcement can alter response allocation accordingly. Such schedules can also influence…

Cihak, David F.; Gama, Robert I. – Education and Training in Developmental Disabilities, 2008
This study determined the effectiveness of noncontingent escape access to self-reinforcement, as a student-directed intervention. Three students successfully used a break card to systematically decrease inappropriate behavior maintained by negative reinforcement while increasing task engagement. In addition, teachers completed an Intervention…

Talkington, Larry W.; Hall, Sylvia M. – Australian Journal of Mental Retardation, 1971
Incentive and behavior were investigated in the study focusing upon a comparison of the effects of response cost (for errors) and response reward (for correct responses) on verbal performance of mentally retarded subjects. (KW)

Cihak, David; Alberto, Paul A.; Fredrick, Laura D. – Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, 2007
Educational experience in the community provides students with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities the opportunity to learn and rehearse skills they need to participate fully in community environments. The degree to which students with intellectual disabilities participate in their communities is often dependent on their ability to…

O'Brien, Maureen; Schofield, Leon J. – Journal of Clinical Psychology, 1975
The effects of positive, negative and neutral reinforcement conditions upon the manual dexterity test scores of adult retardates were assessed in a sheltered workshop setting. (Author)

Tennant, Laurence; And Others – Mental Retardation, 1978
The article provides a review of research on the role of punishment in relation to the normalization of retarded persons and points out that, in the natural environment, punishment procedures normally play some part in the determination of social behavior. (IM)

Isley, Ellen M.; And Others – Research in Developmental Disabilities, 1991
This article summarizes and critically analyzes the literature on self-restraint (in which a mentally retarded individual restricts or prevents motion of a body part), particularly its identification, etiology, modification, and relationship to self-injurious behavior. The paper examines the hypotheses of negative reinforcement and stimulus…

Buddenhagen, R. G. – Mental Retardation, 1971
Examined are two alternatives to the use of electric shock to control destructive or repugnant behaviors in severely retarded or schizophrenic children: continued use of noncorporal punishment, and widescale application of appropriately arranged contingencies of positive reinforcement. (KW)

Vollmer, Timothy R.; Vorndran, Christina M. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
A functional analysis was conducted which showed that self-injurious behavior (SIB) of an adult with mental retardation occurred at differentially high rates when restraint materials access was contingent on behavior. An alone condition during the functional analysis showed SIB did not occur in the absence of restraint materials. Functional…

Kahng, SungWoo; Iwata, Brian A. – Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 1998
A study compared effects of continuous reinforcement (play) and alone conditions as controls during functional analyses for 66 individuals whose self-injurious behavior (SIB) was maintained by escape. SIB was lower during both control conditions than it was during the test (demand) condition. SIB was lowest during the alone condition. (Author/CR)
