Why Become a Public Intellectual: Reflections of a Communication Scholar
Cherwitz, Richard
Liberal Education, v105 n1 Win 2019
Over the past few years, the author has received numerous letters, phone calls, and emails from friends, academic colleagues, and members of the community inquiring why, having been a scholar for more than forty years, he now spends so much time writing op-eds. The author explains his urge to write op-eds and how this urge to write essays for the public at large is especially salient for him as a scholar of rhetoric. He also describes how he realized, during the process of promoting the Intellectual Entrepreneurship Consortium he created, he realized it was time to practice what he preached. He ends with suggesting that perhaps the question is not "Why do I write op-eds?" but rather "Why don't more faculty also write op-eds?"
