ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study is to explore how staff members describe the sex education curriculum, for students with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) and staff attitudes toward working with this population, in the Midwest. How staff members describe the sex education curriculum for students, with ID, and how staff describe staff attitudes toward working with this population is unknown. A qualitative descriptive design was chosen to explore how 72 staff members described the sex education curriculum for students with ID and staff attitudes toward working with this population. This study aimed to answer the following research questions: How does staff members describe the sex education curriculum for ID students? How does staff members describe staff attitudes toward providing sex education for ID students? The theoretical framework surrounded Oliver's social model of disability, to highlight ableism, which focuses on the societal focus on the ID population's disability opposed to their ability to understand sex and sexuality. Semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and an online questionnaire helped to answer the research questions. Interview data was analyzed using the MAXQDA software. The online questionnaire data was analyzed using a 5-Point Likert Scale. Braun and Clarke's 2006 thematic analysis and a hybrid coding approach was used to synthesize and analyze all sources of data. The 4 themes that emerged highlighted staff attitudes toward sexual abuse, policies and procedures, evidence-based sex education curriculum implementation, and sexuality for ID students. While many challenges were apparent, staff members held positive attitudes toward the sex education curriculum and working with the ID population.
