Leutzinger, Larry P.; Nelson, Glenn – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
Some techniques for developing the ability to multiply and divide by powers of ten with ease and understanding are presented. (Author/MK)

Davies, H. B. – International Journal of Mathematical Education in Science and Technology, 1980
Attention is drawn to an ancient Greek method for finding the least common multiple (LCM) of two numbers. A link is established between this method and a well-known method of obtaining the highest common factor (HCF) numbers. This leads to consideration of some relationships between HCF and LCM. (Author/MK)

Trotter, Terrel, Jr.; Myers, Mark D. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
An activity is presented which provides a novel approach to number patterns, experience in following an unusual algorithmic procedure, and practice in systematic search techniques and basic facts. (MK)

Robertson, Jane I. – American Mathematical Monthly, 1979
Three types of arithmetic algorithms are discussed and compared. These are algorithms designed to get the right answer, computer algorithms, and algorithms designed to get the right answer and understand why. (MP)

May, Lola June – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
Changes in the elementary and junior high school mathematics curriculum that have occurred in the last 20 years and that may occur in the future are discussed. (MK)

Beattie, Ian D. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1979
Four procedures used by children for deriving answers to unknown subtraction facts are described. They are counting forward, counting backward, derivation, and bridging. (MP)

Givan, Betty; Karr, Rosemary – Mathematics and Computer Education, 1988
The author presents two examples of lattice multiplication followed by a computer algorithm to perform this multiplication. The algorithm is given in psuedocode but could easily be given in Pascal. (PK)

Hawkin, Wendy – Mathematics in School, 1988
Describes activities in a mathematics class for six-year-olds. The article makes several points, including: working independently is very absorbing; investigative work is as important as algorithms; and children working in groups can achieve more than even the brightest child working alone. (PK)

Sawyer, W. W. – Mathematics in School, 1988
The author advocates a return to "traditional" elementary algebra content. Several roles for algebra manipulation are identified, including making arithmetic more interesting and understandable and providing facility indispensable for both the technician and the mathematician. (PK)

Straker, Anita – Mathematics in School, 1986
The first aim in school might be to help children become more aware of the algorithmic processes they use; then, ensure that they can devise algorithms and define them. Many examples of how these aims can be met are given, including the use of calculators and computers. (MNS)

Sawyer, Ray C. – 1973
The purpose of this project was to determine if the method of subtraction of integers taught to seventh grade students affected their mathematics achievement or retention. Computation, concept, and problem-solving sections of the California Achievement Test were given as pretests and posttests. An investigator-constructed test of the addition and…

Flanders, Harley – College Mathematics Journal, 1987
Computing pi efficiently has been of great interest to mathematicians for centuries. This article presents an algorithm to solve this problem through skillful computer use. (PK)
Descriptors: Algorithms, College Mathematics, Computation, Computer Assisted Instruction

Kidder, F. Richard – Arithmetic Teacher, 1980
The author promotes an earlier introduction of decimals than is currently standard practice in most elementary mathematics programs. Suggested activities and related skills are reviewed. (MP)

CEMREL, Inc., St. Ann, MO. – 1979
These are some of the individual materials needed by students using the Comprehensive School Mathematics Program's Mathematics for the Upper Primary Grades, Part III. The book of "Worksheets" contains materials that are labeled with the same letter and number as the lessons with which they are to be used. The booklets "Festival of…
