The Work Group on the Education of the Health Professions and the Nation's Health offers the theme of discontinuity to describe why so little useful knowledge has been derived from research in this area and to suggest a more productive approach for future studies. Traditionally, nurse practitioners and physician's assistants have been trained separately. In l977, the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at the University of California, Davis, and the Primary Care Associate Program at Stanford University merged clinical curricula. The University of New Mexico Health Science Center offers an elective, weekly clinical experience for preclinical medical students, senior nursing students, and senior pharmacy students at a prison facility in need of medical services.
