Teaching Integrity in Nursing Education: Perspectives of Nurse Educators
Dawn Westbrook
ProQuest LLC, D.Ed. Dissertation, Western Connecticut State University
Integrity is an internal quality of consistently doing what is right, even when no one is watching. The expertise and knowledge acquisition needed by nurses to make decisions to improve patient outcomes is acquired during the education process. However, studies demonstrate that nursing students cheat at the same level as other students, and research supports that students that are academically dishonest are also dishonest in the clinical setting. There is little in the literature that addresses intentional development of integrity in nursing students through the nursing curriculum (DeSimone, 2019). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to describe strategies for the development of integrity in traditional 4-year baccalaureate nursing students within nursing curricula across different regions of the United States from the vantage point of nurse educators. Ten nurse educators were interviewed, and five themes emerged from this study: 1) Integrity is critical to the nursing profession, 2) Integrity is not automatically present, 3) The word integrity is not used, 4) Integrity is evaluated under professional behavior, and 5) Integrity is fostered by managing the environment. While these educators agreed that integrity is critical in students and to the profession of nursing, they also discussed the challenge of developing and evaluating internal processes and traits.
