A classification system and spatial map of occupations were developed using the Basic Interest Scale profiles of 198 occupational incumbent samples (31,010 women; 32,421 men) from the Strong Interest Inventory. Zytowski, Donald G. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1986
The processes by which Roe (1956) and Holland (1966) developed their structural representations of occupations are compared. Roe, using almost exclusively nonempirical means, formulated an eight-group circumplex, virtually identical to Holland's six-group hexagonal configuration that resulted from empirical research spanning 11 years. Harrington, Thomas F.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1971
Four factors emerged from the analysis of the OIS and five factors were isolated on the SVIB. This result and the high intercorrelations among the scales within the factors indicate that grouping occupational scales on the OIS is as appropriate as on the SVIB. (Author)

Westbrook, Franklin D. – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1975
The study compared the arrays of high-interest occupations produced by the Strong and the Kuder. A frequency percentage count showed 85 percent of the pairs of summary codes had two identical characteristics, and some support was found for Holland's hexagon. The implications for further studies comparing the two instruments are discussed. (Author)

Lapan, Richard T.; And Others – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1990
Studied gender differences in factor structure of Basic Interest Scales (BISs) from 1927-85. Results describe clear factor structure for BISs, but scale loadings did not support BISs' General Occupational Theme classifications. Found gender differences for between-factor correlations and relatively stable factor structure over time that existed…

Creaser, James; Carsello, Carmen – Journal of Counseling Psychology, 1976
Scores on the male and female scales of the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory were compared for college students (N=525) to evaluate the claim that male scales should be used with female counselees. Both sexes scored higher on opposite-sex scales. Score relationships support using only same-sex score interpretations with counselees. (Author)
