The study attempts to assess the validity of occupational labor market typologies used in the literature. Analyses of occupational characteristics from 1970 Census Bureau data for males and females indicate occupational labor markets may be more differentiated and complex than suggested in the dual labor market literature. Examined the structure of occupations based on judgments of similarity, compared this structure with those derived from subjects' (N=26) responses to interest inventories, and compared the circular and hierarchical models. Results indicated that a combination of the circular and hierarchical models is preferable to either model alone. (LLL)

The Occupational Work Ethic Inventory was completed by 1,201 workers in various businesses and industries. Women were more likely to endorse the work ethic than men. There were few differences by age or educational level and significant differences by occupation and for those workers with 2-8 years of full-time experience. (SK)

Career recommendations were made based on aptitude scores of 335 high school freshmen. Artificial neural networks were used to map recommendations to 12 occupational clusters. Overall accuracy of neural networks (.80) approached that of discriminant function analysis (.84). The two methods had different strengths and weaknesses. (SK)
