During the period of slavery in the West Indies some slaves became literate. This enhanced their social status and allowed them to move into occupations such as artisan or overseer. Investigates the influence of generation and country of origin on occupational mobility between 1880 and 1900 among a sample of U.S. White men. An examination of socioeconomic conditions and political status of the Black community in the Virgin Islands after emancipation supports the contention that the "Fireburn" uprising of 1878 was not a riot but a labor revolt. In order to study women's social mobility in the United Kingdom, a typology of girls' schools is needed. Proposed here is a typology for girls' secondary schools before 1914.
