Chemical and Engineering News, 1972
American Chemical Society, Office of Professional Relations compared earnings of chemists with tradesmen and with other professionals. Chemists tend to dominate the economic picture for scientists and physicians are among the best compensated professionals. Earnings gains for chemists trail those for tradesmen who have climbed sharply. (Author/TS)

Chemical and Engineering News, 1979
Explains the job situation and earnings status of chemists. Shows the latest annual American Chemical Society survey indicates an improvement in the employment situation, but that salaries lag behind inflation. (GA)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Employment, Income, Labor Market

Chemical and Engineering News, 1975
Describes the first published results of a study entitled "Selected Characteristics of Persons in the Fields of Science or Engineering: 1974." Eight fields were surveyed: computer specialists; engineers; mathematical specialists; life, physical, environmental, and social scientists; and psychologists. Statistics include male to female ratios,…

Chemical and Engineering News, 1972
Describes an American Chemical Society job status survey. Of the 3 percent of the members unemployed as of March 1, 1972, the highest rates of unemployment are among younger, industrial, research, development, and government funded chemists located on the two coasts. (TS)
Descriptors: Chemical Industry, Chemistry, Employment Statistics, Occupational Surveys

Chemical and Engineering News, 1975
Summarizes a report covering six layoffs involving 66 chemists and chemical engineers occurring from March to September 1974. Guidelines for employers were not met by some companies. Note is made of this. (EB)

Descriptors: Chemical Industry, Chemistry, College Graduates, Employment Opportunities

Chemical and Engineering News, 1976
Using 1972 statistics, examines the following job characteristics of chemists, chemical engineers, and other technical professionals: type of job, tenure in 1972 jobs, status prior to obtaining those jobs, tendency to hold a second job, and basic salary level in the primary job. (MLH)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Employment, Engineers, Occupational Information

Chemical and Engineering News, 1977
The results of the annual survey, conducted by the American Chemical Society of the salaries and employment status of its members in March 1977, are presented. The findings indicate that unemployment is dropping and salary increases are merely in step with the cost of living. (BT)
Descriptors: Chemistry, Employment, Employment Patterns, Employment Statistics

Chemical and Engineering News, 1976
Cites salary statistics for chemists between 1975 and 1976 according to employer-type, degree level, geographical location, sex, and other factors. (MLH)

Chemical and Engineering News, 1975
According to a recent study made by the National Science Foundation (NSF), racial minority groups represented about 4 percent (or 53,000) of the 1.3 million scientists and engineers in the U.S. labor force during both 1970 and 1972. The bulk of the minority chemists were in two groups: 2900 were of Oriental descent, and 2100 were blacks. (MLH)

Chemical and Engineering News, 1974
Presents a profile of doctoral scientists and engineers in the United States constructed from data collected by the National Academy of Sciences - National Research Council. The survey shows that the overall unemployment rate for scientists and engineers was 1.2 percent and the median annual salary was $20,890. (JR)
Descriptors: Doctoral Degrees, Employment Statistics, Engineering Education, Engineers

Chemical and Engineering News, 1984
Highlights survey results on the status of females in full-time, tenured or tenure track faculty positions in chemistry. Indicates that males still dominate PhD-granting chemistry faculties and that, although the number of women is increasing, the increase is not proportionate to the rate at which they are earning chemistry PhDs. (JM)

Stinson, Steve – Chemical and Engineering News, 1983
Highlights a survey indicating that, of about 6500 chemical engineers graduating from U.S. schools in 1982-83, slightly fewer than half have job commitments or applications submitted to graduate schools in chemical engineering or other fields. Major reasons include recession and climbing enrollments. (JN)
