Professional and Personal Challenges of Ombudsmen at Higher Education Institutions: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study
Andersen, Kathy Ann Jones
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
University ombudsmen in on-ground and online universities provide conflict resolution resources and problem-solving information to students and faculty seeking assistance to address academic integrity and social conduct conflicts. The problem examined in this qualitative, phenomenological study was that the professional and personal challenges of on ground and online university ombudsmen face dealing with student conduct and integrity issues is not well documented. Seven university ombudsmen from on-ground and online universities who were recruited through the International Ombudsmen Association (IOA) and were current IOA members participated in the study. Participants completed a survey online, which included 15 questions asking them about their experiences and challenges in addressing student and faculty conduct issues and any personal or ethical dilemmas they may face. From the data, it was discovered that ombudsmen experience variable challenges in addressing student conduct issues and that faculty issues involve incivility and bullying either of junior faculty by senior faculty or of faculty by students. Further, the data revealed that ombudsmen usually deal with issues of explaining university processes to students and they use their own judgment in combination with the university rules and processes and IOA best practice recommendations to perform their job.
