Biao Gao; Jun Yan; Ronghui Zhong – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2025
Digital teachers represent an innovative fusion of media and artificial intelligence (AI) within online educational environments. However, the specific ways in which the appearance anthropomorphism of digital teachers influences the delivery of different knowledge types remain insufficiently understood. Drawing on Embodied Learning Theory and…

Cloud-hosted services are being increasingly used in hosting business and scientific applications due to cost-effectiveness, scalability, and ease of deployment. To facilitate rapid development, change and release process of cloud-hosted applications, the area of development and operations (DevOps) is fast evolving. It is necessary to train the…

Celdran, Alberto Huertas; Clemente, Felix J. Garcia; Saenz, Jacobo; de la Torre, Luis; Salzmann, Christophe; Gillet, Denis – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2020
A smart campus provides students who are geographically scattered with online tools to get access to learning resources and laboratories. Although these remote laboratories have the potential and capabilities to implement different learning experiments, most of them are configured in a static fashion, being able to serve only one experiment for a…

Antonio Perez-Alvarez, Ronald; Maldonado-Mahauad, Jorge; Sharma, Kshitij; Sapunar-Opazo, Diego; Perez-Sanagustin, Mar – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2020
Recent research shows that learners who are able to self-regulate their learning show greater levels of engagement with massive open online course (MOOC) content. To improve support for learners in their self-regulatory processes, researchers have proposed technological solutions to transform recorded MOOC data into actionable knowledge. However,…

Moreno-Marcos, Pedro Manuel; Alario-Hoyos, Carlos; Munoz-Merino, Pedro J.; Estevez-Ayres, Iria; Kloos, Carlos Delgado – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2019
One of the characteristics of massive open online courses (MOOCs) is that the overall number of social interactions tend to be higher than in traditional courses, hindering the analysis of social learning. Learners typically ask or answer questions using the forum. This makes messages a rich source of information, which can be used to infer…

Gitinabard, Niki; Xu, Yiqiao; Heckman, Sarah; Barnes, Tiffany; Lynch, Collin F. – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2019
Blended courses that mix in-person instruction with online platforms are increasingly common in secondary education. These platforms record a rich amount of data on students' study habits and social interactions. Prior research has shown that these metrics are correlated with students performance in face-to-face classes. However, predictive models…

Chen, Guanliang; Davis, Dan; Krause, Markus; Aivaloglou, Efthimia; Hauff, Claudia; Houben, Geert-Jan – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2018
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) aim to "educate the world." More often than not, however, MOOCs fall short of this goal--a majority of learners are already highly educated (with a Bachelor's degree or more) and come from specific parts of the (developed) world. Learners from developing countries without a higher degree are…

Alario-Hoyos, Carlos; Pérez-Sanagustin, Mar; Delgado-Kloos, Carlos; Parada G., Hugo A.; Muñoz-Organero, Mario – IEEE Transactions on Learning Technologies, 2014
This paper presents an in-depth empirical analysis of a nine-week MOOC. This analysis provides novel results regarding participants' profiles and use of built-in and external social tools. The results served to detect seven participants' patterns and conclude that the forum was the social tool preferred to contribute to the MOOC.
