Branscomb, Lewis C.; Rogers, A. Robert – College and Research Libraries, 1981
The five critical years in the development of OCLC (1951-56), the culmination of a century of cooperation between Ohio's colleges and universities, are used to underscore its expansion into a bibliographic utility interconnecting 2400 institutions in the United States and Canada. There are 19 references. (RAA)

Pease, Sue; Gouke, Mary Noel – College and Research Libraries, 1982
Results of study on patron information retrieval success and patron use patterns at Ohio State University show that 90 percent of online users preferred online to card catalog; 64 percent of those who tried online catalog switched to it; and patrons used the online more than the card catalog. References are provided. (EJS)

Force, Ronald W.; Force, Jo Ellen – College and Research Libraries, 1979
Describes a computer simulation model developed to provide information on the number of terminals or readers needed in the advent of microfilm or computerized catalogs in libraries. Systems with two to 14 terminals are simulated, and decision variables include average patron waiting time, number of patrons lost, and average terminal utilization.…

Espley, John; Metz, Paul – College and Research Libraries, 1980
Findings of a longitudinal study indicate high success rates for OCLC as a source of cataloging copy. They further suggest that holding patterns for many types of materials may be unnecessary. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Bibliographies, Cataloging, Databases, Library Automation

Broadus, Robert N. – College and Research Libraries, 1983
Review of research on online public access catalogs sponsored by Council on Library Resources notes the scope and method (questionnaires administered to catalog users and nonusers in 29 participating institutions) and findings and applications (including organizational setting and computer system, catalog use and satisfaction, and implications).…

McCarthy, Constance – College and Research Libraries, 1986
This essay addresses issue of uniformity or consistency in application of subject headings--as distinct from consistency among headings--to books on any given topic. Discussion covers purpose of subject headings or descriptors, reliability of choices made by catalogers when assigning subject headings, and card and online catalogs. (18 references)…

Steinberg, David; Metz, Paul – College and Research Libraries, 1984
Findings of study of user perceptions of online public access catalog in an academic library system indicate that: most patrons learned to use system from printed instructions; next most frequent sources of information were library staff and help feature; most patrons were extremely satisfied with system. Six references are cited. (EJS)
Descriptors: College Libraries, Higher Education, Information Retrieval, Library Catalogs

McDonald, David R.; Searing, Susan E. – College and Research Libraries, 1983
Discusses the definition of an online library catalog; five factors to be considered by the online catalog designer; user-computer communication (error messages, help screens, prompts, unnatural language); online tutorials and offline instruction offered by bibliographic instruction librarians; and the current situation. Nine references are…

Alzofon, Sammy R.; Van Pulis, Noelle – College and Research Libraries, 1984
A survey of 430 users of online catalog at Ohio State University Libraries found that most users are undergraduate students (68 percent) and that majority (95 percent) choose online catalog as first source of information. Fewer performed known-item searches and success rates were generally higher than reported in earlier studies. (8 references)…

Pawley, Carolyn – College and Research Libraries, 1982
Surveys reactions of students and faculty to the online circulation system at University of Guelph Library, Ontario. Findings concerning status of users, frequency of use, effectiveness of instructions on screen, convenience of terminal locations, type of information required by user, and general comments are noted. Four references are provided.…

Moore, Carole Weiss – College and Research Libraries, 1981
Analyses of the success-failure rates and user reactions using four public access online systems indicate that users overwhelmingly preferred the online to manual systems. Improved subject access emerged as the salient feature requiring improvement. Seven references are included. (Author/RAA)
Descriptors: Academic Libraries, Databases, Higher Education, Information Retrieval

Norden, David J.; Lawrence, Gail Herndon – College and Research Libraries, 1981
Suggests improvement to online catalogs based on a 2 1/2 year study of patron search patterns. Preliminary findings indicate significant differences in search strategies and suggest that these strategies and the reasons patrons choose them should be important factors in the design of future online catalogs. Fourteen references are included.…

Smith, Karen F. – College and Research Libraries, 1986
Describes how a librarian, assisted by a knowledge engineer, developed a computerized reference assistance system for a separate government documents department. Rationale for the expert system, problems in selecting reference materials and user questions to computerize, and the formulation of a workable human/computer interface are covered. A…

Sage, Charles; And Others – College and Research Libraries, 1981
Analyzes queueing statistics to determine their utility in predicting catalog usage and the relationships between card and serials catalogs and to pinpoint peak catalog usage. This measurement should provide one factor in a simulation model to accurately predict the number of catalog devices needed for alternative catalog formats. Eight references…

Creaghe, Norma S.; Davis, Douglas A. – College and Research Libraries, 1986
Describes an automated storage/retrieval system which is integrated with an online catalog and circulation system at California State University--Northridge as a practical solution to the problems of expanding collections and escalating construction costs. The impact of this system on user services is discussed. (CDD)
