The advancement of science through information transfer and the role of operations research and information science in this process are re-examined by the author in terms of the rise of technological disillusionment, scientific recession and concern with the limits of growth. Operations Research models of the acquisition and storage functions of a library are developed. Rules for selection of materials for a depository are analyzed and models of circulation interference and usage are explored. A generalized model of library costs and benefits is proposed.
