Emmerich, Helen Jones; Ackerman, Brian P. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1978
This experiment assessed interactions between encoding and retrieval strategies in recall. Three levels of encoding conditions (random, blocked, sort) and three types of retrieval conditions (free, cued, constrained) were examined at three age levels (6, 10, and 18 years). (CM)

Ritchey, Gary H. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1980
Tests the notion that activation in children's semantic memory might best be considered in terms of both between-item and within-item elaboration. Subjects were 192 second, fourth, and sixth graders. (MP)

Cox, Donna; Waters, Harriet Salatas – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1986
Reports on two experiments that investigated sex differences in the use of organization strategies in free recall with categorizable and unrelated word lists across age in elementary school. Shows sex differences were pronounced across the ages tested and consistent with principles of strategy development, with males showing a developmental lag in…

Waters, Harriet Salatas; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1993
Third graders produced narrative or descriptive passages in response to prompt words. Results supported the domain-specific view of production, in which content elaboration occurs across repeated productions when there is a connection between the earlier and the later production and that connection is based on semantic similarity. (ME)

Liberty, Charles; Ornstein, Peter A. – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1973
Findings provide information about developmental differences in sorting and recall, as well as evidence that organizational training may influence recall performance. (Authors)

Bjorkland, David F.; And Others – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1992
Examined free recall of kindergartners and third and eighth graders. The use of organizational strategies, which was demonstrated by third and eight graders, led to increased performance only for eighth graders. These results suggest a phase in strategy development when production of a strategy results in little benefit in performance. (LB)

Baumeiser, Alfred A.; Smith, Stu – Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, 1979
Addresses the questions of whether young children would differentially utilize spatial and thematic cues for recall and/or organization and whether such effects would persist over time. Subjects were 60 fifth-grade and 60 preschool children. (MP)
