The Relationship between Interpersonal Trust and Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior in Higher Education Faculty and Staff

Unethical behavior within organizations results in a financial burden and damage to the organization's reputation. The literature clearly documents the effects of unethical pro-organizational (UPB) behavior in corporate business, but few studies explore this phenomenon in higher education. This non-experimental, cross-sectional survey investigated the prevalence of UPB in higher education, any potential difference in engagement in UPB by faculty versus staff, and if a predictive relationship existed between interpersonal trust and UPB. Invitations to participate were sent to randomly selected faculty and staff members from accredited higher education institutions across the United States with 28 complete survey responses. Findings indicated both faculty and staff engaged in UPB. While not statistically significant, staff tended to engage in UPB more than faculty. There was no significant predictive relationship between interpersonal trust and UPB, but there was a trend toward an inverse relationship in faculty and a positive relationship in staff. These findings add to the literature regarding interpersonal trust and UPB and lay the groundwork for further study of this phenomenon in higher education. Further research is needed to identify antecedents to UPB and effective measures to reduce the prevalence of this phenomenon in this population.
