Student Attitudes towards STEM in a Pacific Island Community
Mark Jonathan Moreland
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Wilkes University
There are well documented differences in gendered participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields across cultures and societies. Gender inequality in STEM reveals itself in global pay gaps and minority underrepresentation. Previous research has found that student attitudes towards career fields are rooted in their early experiences, self-efficacy, and social cultural environments. In order to encourage a future of diverse STEM professionals, more must be understood about students' attitudes towards STEM, differences among student populations, and how their attitudes might affect future choices in STEM careers. The purpose of the study was to determine attitudes towards STEM held by students in a Pacific Island community. There is little research on this diverse student population. The primary research question was, "What differences exist between student attitudes towards STEM and demographic factors?" In a non-experimental quantitative survey approach, data was gathered from students in grades 6-8 in a single middle school. Four hypotheses were tested, and two were found to have statistically significant results. The independent variables of gender and grade level were found to have an influence on student attitudes towards STEM. The results of this study will allow policymakers, educators, and school leaders to have a better understanding of the attitudes towards STEM that the students in their diverse Pacific Island communities hold.
