The Role of the Role Model--Pacific Students' Perspectives and School Teachers' Learnings
Cherie Chu-Fuluifaga; Martyn Reynolds
set: Research Information for Teachers, n3 p33-40 2024
Teachers have responsibility and can assume agency for enhancing the education of Pacific students in Aotearoa New Zealand. Pacific education is an area which needs improvement and, consequently, Pacific communities seek actions -- deliberate strategies -- to enhance educational provision. Among the strategies available is the engagement of role models, people whose success can constructively support Pacific students' thought and action about their own futures. However, little is known about how Pacific role models are understood and related to by Pacific students, particularly in the primary and secondary sectors. Such information would be valuable to schools and teachers when considering how to make the most of Pacific role models. This article, which reflects on a role models event, offers information in this area. It also includes guidance for schools on how to action role model events -- and education in general -- to enhance Pacific education in ways likely to be valued by Pacific communities.
